No one is paying $1.2b for that.

Frank is just talking large to maintain the illusion that all talks are going to occur at that altitude. If he said “We’re going to sell for $900m” then the first seller in the door is going to start 20% below that. It’s posturing for the media today and buyers later on. What makes it ridiculous is that anyone buying the team is going to be sophisticated enough to brush this aside and set their own valuation.

You may recall that, due to the genius that is Jon Daniels, Cliff Lee’s salary was paid by the M’s as part of that trade. It was not a free agent signing, so that comparison doesn’t apply here… Apples vs. Oranges.

plus the dodger brand is known worldwide. so even though the team has been down lately the dodgers have the potential to be a cash cow.

While the Dodgers not bidding on free agents this year is bad for Fielder and Pujols and the likes, getting rid of McCourt and thus improving the chances the Dodgers will have money to spend in the future is in the long term best interests of the players.

It isn’t the team that is valuable…it is all the properties surrounding the stadium that are highly valuable, no matter how screwed up the Dodgers are (which is a temporary state), the properties McCourt owns are worth a crap load as parking facilities or for development.

You would think that the players’ union would object to having a team controlled by the Commissioner decide that it will not bid on any free agents.
