Apples, oranges, cherries and Studebakers. Nomar was traded in a pennant race, and there was nothing wrong with explaining why. The Red Sox didn’t trash Damon, the fans did. Manny was trashed for behaving unconscionably, and deserved every criticism, and more, that he got. The Red Sox haven’t said anything bad about Francona, and if there were any slams on Pedro, there weren’t many—my recollection was that he made the silly comments about the team “disrespecting him” with its offer.

Players who act like jerks tend to get called jerks.

Ah, they used to say that about the Yankees too. I won’t put too much stock in that notion.

The real issues is that there has been one story after another and all of which are trying to rationalize or lay blame as to why the RS flopped in September. At this juncture who cares? And, while every story has an embarrassing aspect to it, none of those aspects are superseded by the low rent junior high school manner in which they are revealed. In the current PR war the RS have lost EVERY skirmish. The only thing worse than September’s nose dive has been the profoundly lame attempt at damage control that followed.

Pick a manager, accept the compensation for Epstein and put last season in the in the past. Start looking forward. If the RS want to stop dealing with this BS and rebuild their image they need to shut up and conduct baseball business and forget damage control.
