After 6 years of MLB service time a player is free agent eligible. Because of time spent in the minors, the Reds may have the rights to Chapman for one year after his current contract expires.

Jay, Fukudome isn’t a free agent until 2014. The clause in his contract could be that when he reaches free agency he can’t be offered arbitration so that his market value won’t be hurt similar to the clause Beltran had in his contract this year.

They can put it in their contract though that the team will not offer arbitration. That’s what Fukudome did with the Cubs. His deal was for 4 years, plus they couldn’t offer arbitration, so he is a full free agent right now.

Gotta get these guys for cheap….Cespedes will probably spend 1-1.5 seasons in the minors to start, so even a “reasonable” 5 yr/35m contract is in reality more like a 3.5yr/35m. That’s a pretty big gamble for a guy who didn’t even dominate his own inferior talent league.

Kevin, I’m pretty sure because of the way MLB service time rules are that even if he signs a four year contract the team would still have him under control for six years. He would be arbitration eligible after his contract expires. You can’t be a major league free agent until you reach 6 years of MLB service time.

Would the team get six years of control? My impression was that most ML-ready Cuban defectors signed deals precluding the team from offering arbitration the way Japanese players do. I would guess the team only gets however many years are on the actual deal.
