A team retains the rights to the player for 6 years so even after the 3 year contract ends the player is still under team control for an additional three years and would go through the arbitration process like any other 3-year veteran. That is, of course, unless another long term contract is worked out.

Does a team gain an international free agents’ rights for 6 seasons, no matter the contract? I ask because otherwise I don’t understand why a team would sign a guy like this to a 3-year deal.
