"Who knows? Maybe the Sox are listening to the smartest guy they have?"

Careful Jame is merely a statistician. And, while hiring someone with the opposite managerial style might generate short term, i.e. a season give or take, any improvement long term it levels out. In fact Billy Martin, as suggested, was an excellent example of that. Valentine always impressed me as Billy Martin lite. Same attitude, same MO, without all the drinking and fighting.

In the end, he'll need players that will respond to his managerial style or the immediate effect will dissipate fairly quickly. And, unlike Martin's time players don't respond as well to dictator types.

Martin used to say that there are 25 guys on a team. Five are on your side and will do anything for you no matter what. Five aren't on your side and won't do a thing for you no matter what. It's the managers job to keep the 15 guys in the middle from going over to the other side. If the RS hire Valentine he might get an early boost but he better find a way to keep his players on his side if he wants anything like sustained success.

You think Valentine likes giving post game interviews after losing?

I don't think so either.

I'm not sure what the payroll was of all the teams he managed, but with the Sox he'll have almost as much as the Yankees to spend.

One thing is certain to me - these guys don't need a "players coach" - and Bobby V. is definitely not a "players coach"

15 Years managing
.490 Winning %
0 first place teams
2 Teams that won 90+ games
2 Playoff appearances
1 WS appearance

A long while back, Bill James wrote about data indicating the most successful managerial transitions were when hard-driving, disciplinarian types were replaced by more easy-going leaders, and vice-versa. Billy Martin-Bob Lemon-Billy Martin was the epitome of this. When I realized Francona would be sacked following his team's melt-down, I assumed that Valentine would be the obvious choice, with James in the House of Sox.

Who knows? Maybe the Sox are listening to the smartest guy they have?

Standby flights to Macondo should be abundant. Students are already home for the holidays. Housewives are busy filing their elbow spikes and polishing their brass knuckles for Black Friday, and they've got their husbands milling mindlessly around Winn-Dixie with shopping lists they can't make bat shit out of. Grab this opportunity. The ecosystem will look like the bottom of a Shake N' Bake bag by this time next year.
