This isn't football or basketball where team chemistry is an extremely vital part of a team. I will buy chemistry being important between pitcher and catcher but that is about it. Baseball is really about measurables. Barmes is excellent defensively. That is not an intangible. There is concrete data to support that. Barmes, however, can't hit. There is data to support that. Being a good clubhouse guy is largely irrelevant in baseball.

You know what helps to win games even more than intangibleness? Hits, Walks, Home Runs. I'm not typically one to shove stats down ones throat, but I've just never gotten the intagibles thing. Nobody has ever been able to actually explain to me how intangibles help, but I can easily explain the use of Hits, Walks, HR's, ect. Maybe I just lack faith.

My theory is that Jim Hendry is an advisor for the Pirates and they are warming up on how to give bad contracts to crappy outfielders. Once they figure out how to overpay their middle infielders they will move up to contracts for the next Soriano, Bradley or Fukudome.

Like the move, the Bucs just upgraded at the shortstop position. Barmes isn't the long term answer, but Ronny Cedeno wore out his welcome. There's more to baseball than statistics, and Hurdle is aware of the intangibles(besides the consistent glove), that Barmes brings to the position.
