I think ‘best’ in this thread is interpreted by A’s fans as meaning “most talented”. The reason most of us fans feel Brett Anderson is the best is his 2010 ERA of 2.80, which hints at his # 1 upside. In 2011 he was pitching with a bad elbow.

In 2009, note how his rookie line of 30 starts, 175.1 innings and 4.06 compares to 17 starts, 98 innings, and 5.75 ERA for Gio.

Keep in mind also Brett’s only 23 now, to Gio’s 26.

So yes, Gio’s last 2 years have been at a higher performance level overall, but no doubt Oakland’s most talented pitcher is Brett Anderson.

He’s a 26-yr-old lefty who’s done this the past two years:

2010 – 15 wins, 200 ip, 171 k’s, 3.23 ERA
2011 – 16 wins, 202 ip, 198 k’s, 3.12 ERA

That’s not Oakland’s best pitcher?

The A’s will string this discussion along at least through the Winter Meeting. Keep in mind the post over the weekend, that Air Bud is coming to San Fran to talk to the Giants about territorial rights to San Jose (or is it just to get the first Irish Coffee of the season). Upon those discussions hinge the better part of the A’s offseason strategy, and the great and powerful Beane could easily keep Gio for another year, especially with the A’s best pitcher, Brett Anderson, sidelined until July at least.

Gio certainly had a good year last year, but I think it’s a stretch to call him Oakland’s best pitcher. He’s a sell high candidate and, as an A’s fan, I’d love it if Billy could get a decent haul for him.

Why would the A’s include Pennington in the deal? I think the players who played significant time last season would be Marlins players….Also, the Marlins do not really need a SS.

Given the reports about just what the Marlins offered Pujols and Reyes, I suspect their discussions with the A’s involved offering to send Oakland a minor prospect and two tickets to this weekend’s Heat/Raptors game in exchange for Gonzalez.

I am sure that the Jays are interested in Gonzalez. AA does not leak information about trade discussions, but he has a history of trading with Oakland.
