First, because he isn’t ready, and pushing guys too fast retards development, it doesn’t accelerate it.

Second, if they aren’t going to win next year anyway, there is no reason to waste a year of cost control on a guy that isn’t ready anyway.

No, 147 ABs isn’t a lot to go on….but is is all we got, and it wasn’t great…it really wasn’t even good, and it certainly didn’t indicate that he’s ready to start next year in the majors.

I respectfully disagree. 147 AB’s isn’t really a lot to go on. If you just look at the numbers you have a point, but if you consider the whole situation I think that “he isn’t ready” is overly simplistic. Now if you look at Yount as a rookie and say he wasn’t really ready or J. Upton or Andrew Jones, etc. and say that in that same way Harper isn’t ready, then ok, I guess so. But the Nats aren’t going to win anyway, just like the Brewers weren’t going to win in Yount’s rookie year, so why not play a guy who is clearly going to be there sooner than later anyway.

Oh, and Harper isn’t ready to be an MLB regular anyway, he was a league average AA player while at that level last year….he could use at least another 1/2 season in the minors. If this affects him at all, it’ll be because they don’t bring him up until June of 2013.

No, it isn’t. Teams will adjust just fine….and many already are….all they have to do is to stop giving dumb contracts to veterans that have already proven they are below average MLB players….with non-stupid management, all this will do is put salaries in line with ability/talent/production more quickly.

Players Union is getting out of hand with all of this. More Super-2′s, astronomically high salaries, and the like… how long is it before we start to see $20 million dollar (per year) closers? 2nd year players making $10million? All of baseball is going to end up becoming feeder teams to the higher income few.
