Well, that would just be silly. Why should you get compensation for losing a guy you didn’t want to keep?

Plus, you only get compensation if the guy turns you down and then signs a major league deal with another team.

I think the ability to have an agreement that the player will turn down arbitration as a favor is crap because it is against the spirit and intent of the rule…..but as long as it is there, I’m sure everyone is taking advantage of it.

Still, the Phillies won’t get anything out of this unless Ibanez signs with someone else….how likely is that? Who wants a 40 yr old OF that can’t hit or play defense?

I could be wrong, but under the new CBA you don’t have to offer arbitration to get a draft pick for a Type B.

He’s also one of the nicest human beings you will ever meet and extremely charitable. These aspects of his reputation are well accepted. But that’s probably not as meaningful as the whole “one side full of chaw” thing that you hate him for. That all being said, if he does not have an “understanding” that he will turn down arbitration and accepts, I will personally hire the guy from Assassins Creed to hunt down Amaro and end all this madness.

My least favorite player, Raul Ibanez. Can’t stand the way he always has that stupid intense one-side-full-of-chaw expression on his face and constantly taking off is helmet to show his sweaty bald head. And the fact that he’s a Phillie. Never has a player looked so intense while putting up a sub-.700 OPS.

Don’t the Phillies only get a sandwich pick if Ibanez signs with another team? Otherwise teams would offer arbitration to all their free agents and tell them not to accept it.
