Drew - I agree with the posters that you did a good job here with your report. I too am a baseball lover since age 9, but here is my problem when you make statements like the one claiming that great theaters and great ballparks are supposed to evoke the same sentiments. They are as different as different can be.

I don't mean to be a hater, a snob or somebody's party spoiler. But at this point in our country's history, the people involved with opera houses, theater, jazz and blues - all of which have a great history in St. Louis - are struggling mightily if not going bankrupt. While major league baseball is awash in cash, popularity and TV ratings, most sports fans don't know jacksh*t about the arts. Yeah, I know I'm stereotyping, and maybe it's not even their fault, as a lot of arts education has been taken from their education in the public schools.

I would love to remain a baseball fan AND an arts advocate, but it is getting harder and harder in these dumbed-down times to view all of it with an equally open heart, if you catch my drift. It's getting harder and harder to view self-congratulatory and self-promoting displays like the one you are describing here and not be negatively judgmental. Like I said, I don't mean to be a hater and I certainly don't have answers, I'm just sayin'.

Thanks Drew, for the heart-felt assessment of the evenings activities. When I was a kid, about 45-50 years ago, my Dad used to take me to Kiel to watch SLU, and the Hawks play. Later it was music. Simon and Garfunkle, (where they performed 'Bridge over Troubled Waters', live for the 1st time), The Allman Bros., Arlo Guthrie, Emily Lou Harris, and Waylan Jennings. So happy to hear about the renovation.

Kudos for the gig. Good on you. A Thanksgiving to remember. Something tells me it is only a stepping stone.

Don't ever think you need to justify writing about baseball while also being a fan of a particular team. I hate when media members act like they are no longer fans once they become media members as if there is a switch that you can turn off that erases years of fandom. I say you should just be honest about it, even root your team on here and there as long as you can be honest when writing about the fortunes of the other teams. The crew on MLB network have all played for someone and have obvious rooting interests but still are enjoyable to watch and leave the rooting behind when needed.

Glad you didn't ask Freese what is was like to meet Bieber. Oh, and try steel toed shoes (Doc Martin makes a very nice one) for standing in crushing crowds with impunity. I hate getting my toes stepped on. Unbeatable for winning bar fights, too.
