Wanted soon to be 40 year old outfielder with short range, declining batting average and demanding to be paid like a superstar. Hmmm so I guess the Phillies know something that we don’t know. Correct me if I am wrong; but there’s no DH in the National League? Maybe they just want to have him around for inter league play and in the event they make it to the World Series? Sounds like a very expensive role player

Obviously, I have no idea about any “artificial inflation,” but it’s not unusual for players of that quality to crater in their late 30s.

The article was written in his first season with the Phillies. It came out about midway through the season. The first half was phenomenal- the second half- pretty forgettable. Once that story came out, he got old REAL quick. That’s all I’m saying.

Ibanez hasn’t been any good since that story where the guy implied his numbers might have been “artifically inflated”- after that, his numbers mysteriously got flushed down the toilet.

I can’t believe MLB is happy about the Phillies publicly circumventing the rules like this… Not sure how to alleviate the problem as I think making Ibanez accept the arbitration would be overkill, but something needs to be done so this doesn’t become common place. I’m sure the first agent/player who agrees to this kind of deal and then backs out would probably be black listed by other GM’s.

Jorge can trade off catching, DHing and 1st base duties with Pudge. Looks like I forgot Wakefield, though. So that makes 2 “starters” & a closer. Joe Nathan can work long relief & Contreras as set up man, I guess. Arthur Rhodes to the pen. Omar Vizquel at short, of course. Jim Thome can play 3rd. Team’s shaping up…shaping up to need rocking chairs instead of benches, but what they hey; that’s the most vetrany leadershipy team anyone has.

I feel like having a go at assembling my “Team for the Aged” here (lets call them the All Franco Squad). The criteria need only be age greater than 35 and active as a player status.

So, lets see; Ibanez, Pudge, Moyer, Posada, Mo, Vladdy….that’s all I can think of off hand (Bonds hasn’t officially retired has he? I need a LFer/DH). Still a few old guys short of a real team, though. A’course McKeon would manage and George Steinbrenner’s shade would own it (I’m pretty sure The Boss’s ghost is at least as lively some other owners in baseball).

Actually, they don’t lose any draft picks. They still get two for Madson, One a first round pick if the taker has one, and a sandwich pick, if he signs, which he will. This means the Phillies get 3 for Madson and Ibanez alone.

Are there any potential rules or CBA violations with this? I’m sure it happens often, but it just seems weird a they can agree on something like this so the team gets an extra draft pick.
