Who would trade for him at $15 million for the next 2 years? He will end up in the bullpen before the Yankees will eat any significant portion of his contract.

History has shown that 95% of baseball players are through at 35-36-37 especially pitchers. Average time of a player in baseball is a little over 5 years. A performance contract was a necessity. Another 5 million down the drain.

AJ won’t be traded. NY would have to eat a significant portion of his contract to move him, and they have a history of not doing that. NY has him for 2 more seasons and he will start, or come out of the bullpen for middle relief.

I don’t think we will see a bigger piece this year unless Cashman can work a trade. It seems more likely we see a similar short term signing for Colon. Noesi may get a shot at the rotation as well.

Hopefully this is a small piece of the puzzle to improve the rotation. The bigger piece is yet to come, and if Yankee fans are lucky it will include the trading of AJ Burnett, supposedly there have been a few teams inquiring about him. Heaven help those teams inquiring about AJ, as the saying goes, ” be careful what you wish for “

The Yankees have more than one question mark in their rotation. Hughes was terrible last year, and Burnett has pitched poorly for two straight years. As long as Garcia is healthy, there will be plenty of innings for him to fill. And this signing says nothing about whether the Yankees plan to go after a higher-level starter.

It could possibly be a dumb move by Garcia. Someone else might have paid him more money. But it was a great move by the Yankees. Garcia has always been solid when healthy. What team doesn’t need a solid, average starter?
