Rangers grant Astros permission to interview Thad Levine

Just as the Rays did with Andrew Friedman, the Rangers have granted the Astros permission to speak to Thad Levine about their general manager opening, according to T.R. Sullivan of

Levine is the Rangers’ assistant general manager, working under Jon Daniels for the past six seasons.

It seems fairly obvious that Friedman is the Astros’ first choice, but few people seem to think he’s legitimately interested in the job despite being from Houston.

Levine would be a very good fallback option and the 40-year-old Virginia native has filled just about every possible front office role between his time with the Rangers, Rockies, and Dodgers.

I’m also rooting for the Astros to hire Levine just so Zachary Levine of the Houston Chronicle could cover him. They would immediately become my mother’s favorite team.

All of the initial talk in the Houston press was about either dragging Friedman in or bringing Hunsicker back. I have no idea what the interest of either guy is. Friedman was supposed to be a hometown boy and there is the discussion about the viability (fans-wise) of the TB franchise. Hunsicker did a good job at Houston while he was there, although he stripped a lot of prospects out for playoff runs that didn’t go far in the end. Therein lie a lot of Houston’s present problems. My gut feel is that this guy with Texas is a lot more likely.

But as I said in another thread, a GM will not be a lot better than his organization for drafting and developing players. Ed Wade completely rebuilt that, but I haven’t seem much come out of it yet.

I’d like to imagine interviews in Texas involving chew, listening to Alan Jackson records, wearing snakeskin boots & cowboy hats and calling the interviewee “son.”

Probably in Fort Worth (or points west). In Houston, not so much.
