I think he’s worth the flier. $4MM isn’t exactly a crippling amount of money, and they definitely should be trying Crow in the rotation in my opinion.

Less than that…the guy that blew the most saves/chance….was the most expensive guy in the bullpen.

The guys in the bullpen that was fantastic during the stretch run and during the playoffs made $5M last year.

Mean while the Twin’s still sit with a bullpen full of AAAA relievers and Glen Perkins. I was hoping they’d give Brox a chance b/c really, it’s better than nothing.

Maybe it’s because they can’t attract any star players due to their losing ways, so they have to improve in the one area that they can find solid players – the bullpen. See also: 2011 Oakland Athletics.

If you have $4M and nothing to spend it on, then you keep it until you do have something to spend it on, and/or have enough money to sign a player that will make a difference. If they want to blow $4M, it would make more sense to try to sign Hosmer to an extension, than to sign an erratic and busted reliever.

I agree with the premise too, but KC has some money to burn this year…but not enough $$$$ to grab a top flight starter (that they really need) like CJ Wilson.

Other than a starter or 2b…I don’t really see anywhere in the lineup that DM should go out and spend a ton of money right now.

It’s a one year deal so it is not going to handcuff them like the stupid Jose Guillen deal. DM has said all offseason that he wants to keep some payroll flex.

I completely agree with your premise. I watched Kevin Towers put together a top 5 bullpen year after year by scowering the lower reaches of other teams system. It won’t kill them as it’s just a one year deal, but you would think they could have used that money a little better. Of course the offseason is young, so who knows what the plan actually is.

Soria really can’t stay healthy pitching 60 innings in the bullpen, the Soria to starter-ship has long since sailed away.

This move is low risk, high reward (see Melky, Frenchy contracts last year). It also gives KC some flexibility moving forward. They want to try Crow in the rotation and this move will help make that possible. Or as has been stated earlier this could free up a trade of Soria…

I don’t really think you can have “too many” bullpen arms. Bullpens ebb and flow every season. Just because it was a strength last year doesn’t guarantee a repeat performance this season. Lots of youth in the KC pen that could take a step back this year.

What a dumb signing, seriously. If there is one place a team with limited payroll can be efficient, it is in bullpen construction. Last year’s Cardinal bullpen made less money than Papelbon. The projected opening day Cardinal bullpen will make about $5M….relievers are the definition of fungible resource….just about any team can dip into their minor league system, convert a starter with 2 decent pitches to a closer, and get 90% of a Papelbon-like performance for < $1M.

More than 10% of your payroll to sign a set up man for a team who’s strength was already the bullpen? And we wonder why small market teams can’t compete. It’s because they make stupid decisions. I can only hope that means a trade of Soria is on the horizon. Otherwise, we’re looking at another low 70′s win season and no playoffs in KC.
