Red Sox deny report that Lamont is out of running

6:30 p.m. EST: The Red Sox are denying that they’ve eliminated Gene Lamont from contention for the vacancy. Lamont also says he hasn’t heard anything from the Red Sox suggesting that he’s out of the mix.

It’s down to Bobby Valentine and, umm…., Bobby Valentine?

Sources told ESPN’s Karl Ravech that Gene Lamont is no longer a candidate to take over as Boston’s manager. With Torey Lovullo also out of the running, Valentine is the only remaining known candidate for the job.

Ravech’s sources said Valentine has yet to be offered the job, but that such a move appears imminent.

Valentine, who worked for ESPN last season, would be returning to the dugout for the first time since 2002. He went 581-605 with the Rangers from 1985-1992 and 536-467 with the Mets from 1996-2002. He took the Mets to the World Series as a wild card in 2000, but he’s never managed a first-place team.

Bobby’s a smart and passionate guy who would be a good choice, but I hope Lamont gets one more chance somewhere, someday. I really like him.

      Very nicely said

By all previous accounts it seems that Bobby V is Larry Lucchino’s man and not Cherington’s. Makes you wonder who’s steering the ship.

Now all they need to do is hire Omar Minaya, who it’s been reported previously they had interest in and Steve Phillips as “Special Assistants to Somebody” and then some may start to call the Red Sox the Boston Mets.

The would need a few more terrible contracts to be the Mets.

I’m all in favor of that train wreck.

Weren’t the Mets in the World Series in 2000? I believe 2002 was Angels over Giants.

Whoops. I had 2002 on the brain. Thanks.

        Not a problem.

The Red Sux flip flop more than native son Mitt Romney. Maybe they should hire him as their new manager if that presidential thing doesn’t work out.

Obviously, this is the narrative favored by the evil Boston media….just because Valentine has been offered the job and accepted it, doesn’t mean Lamont is out of the running…as usual they are jumping to conclusions and manipulating the facts to make the Boston FO look bad.
