The Giants extend the contracts of Brian Sabean and Bruce Bochy

Brian Sabean phone

Yes, I know that pic is old. And that Brian Sabean appears to be holding a Motorola flip phone in his hand. I use it, however, because (a) it’s awesome; and (b) it underscores just how long that dude has been in charge of the Giants.

And it will be a little longer now, because the Giants have just announced that the contracts of Sabean and manager Bruce Bochy have been extended through 2013 with club options for 2014.

Sabean has had his job since 1996, meaning that by the time this deal is up, assuming the option is picked up, he will have been at the helm for 18 years.  Bochy has been the Giants’ manager since 2007.  Before that he had 12 years in the Padres dugout.  Say what you want about any one of their deals or moves, but these two are consistency and stability personified, and that’s worth something.

And now, with extra job security at their disposal, each of them can proceed to do exactly what they want this offseason: sign Jeromy Burnitz or someone a lot like him to a three-year deal.

    Poor, poor Brandon Belt.

sign Jeromy Burnitz or someone a lot like him to a three-year deal.

What, forty-three year olds who have been out of baseball five years?

If Sabean had his way, “forty-three year olds” and “out of baseball five years” would never be in the same sentence.

What are the chances that Sabean still uses that phone? I’m going to guess pretty high…

      It is a proven veteran.

He never returns any of my phone calls, so you’re assuming he uses any phone.

      • CJ - Nov 29, 2011 at 3:19 PM

that’s proof positive for me. that phone has to be 10 years old now, in phone years, that’s right about the selective memory stage.

Sabean needs Ned Colletti as the heir apparent. Colletti obviously was not trained properly.

    Or then, maybe he was.

If this was a play on their prior relationship, then good job and stupid me for it going over my head, but you do know Colletti used to be Sabean’s assistant, right?

    • dlevalley - Nov 29, 2011 at 2:59 PM

      I don’t know, there’s a reason we call him ‘secret agent Ned’…

They have been great at developing pitchers and terrible at developing hitters…props to Righetti and the scouts! So I guess more 1 run games through 2013/14. The pitchers will have to be in the “best shapes of their lives” to keep pitching shutouts in order to win games. Hopefully the bullpen stays strong because they will be needed badly. And the rumors will continue that Cain and Lincecum will bolt for less offensively challenged teams. We’ll see if they can get Lincecum to sign more than a 1 or 2yr deal, while Cain will most likely sign a 4 yr deal…I hope.

So… we’re done pretending that Sabean is anything more than the guy who happened to be standing there when seven teams missed on Lincecum?

The phone is Photoshopped in…Brian only communicates by smoke signal, or Pony Express…
