Sure, Smack, I buy that. But for John Farrell, former BoSox pitching coach, that’s a grip correction and about a month of practice to fix. You can’t teach the kind of velocity Broxton has. You can’t teach mound presence nor the ability to block the light from center field when you’re on the mound. A good closer has to intimidate as well as dominate. If you’re Mo or Papelbon you do it with reputation, movement and velocity (of course Paps adds a comedy routine, but that’s just window dressing to some legitimate power). If you’re Broxton, all you need to do is add the movement to the +95mph stuff, ’cause a guy that size looks like a dump truck is coming at you.

Especially considering how overwhelmingly revolted the entire American population (and beyond) was by Vick’s loathsome crimes. I dare say a pretty sizable proportion of sportsmen were among them. There’s a lot of open space for respect for your quarry between the demands of hunting well and beating a defenseless dog to death – and if you can’t see that, the bigger surprise is that you were even literate enough to post here.

I don’t get why Brox has such low interest. He’s a big strong guy, can throw a ton and has been pretty successful when he’s healthy. The procedure he had on his elbow seems minor: cleaning up bone doesn’t usually involve messing with ligaments and the like (unless there’s something about that procedure we’re not being told: nothing new there).

If the Beaver Men went out and got this guy I’d be pretty happy with that.
