Perhaps the RS FO are aware that with Valentine a little goes a long way?

I’ve been thinking that if the RS don’t at least get into the playoffs next year whatever discord that is the result of his managerial style will start to, at least, be whispered about. If he rubs people the wrong way and they win, fine. But, a manager can’t do that and the on field results not be there.

It is entirely possible that the all the speculation regarding Valentine and his pugnacious managerial style will present itself and generate all the expected results. I happen to think that Valentine being out of MLB for 10 years, certainly being older if not wiser and getting an opportunity with a team that has the potential and resources to get to the playoffs regularly if not the WS will temper his attitude. I expect him to be true to himself but I doubt that he’ll deliberately court confrontation and that he’ll work hard to have at least the appearance of a successful relationship with Cherington.

At the end of the day, considering his reputation and his 10 year hiatus from MLB, his age and the very real possibility that this may be his last shot as a MLB manager position Valentine is aware that what is at stake. He’d have to be a moron not to make every effort to make this situation work. He may come across as a overbearing cocky know it all but that that doesn’t mean he can’t adapt.

What candidate should they have offered more than 2 years to? Maybe if Torre or LaRussa were walking around Yawkey…but to any of those other guys? If they offered someone 5 years, they’d be getting crucified for locking up an unproven person for so long.

I think 2 years is fine for flexibility sake considering Valentine is neither a sure-thing, or a young guy that needs 3-4 years to get into the system. If he stinks, he’s gone. If he’s good, then either he gets an extension or goes onto another opportunity. I am not a fan of Valentine, but I like Valentine-and-see-what’s-around-in-2013 than get tied to one of the guys they talked to this year.

At least there is one challenge that Bobby V won’t have to face. That’s trying to figure out a way to get Papelbon to speed up his delivery. That challenge now falls to the Phillies Charlie Manuel. Phillies fans can now look forward to at least 10 more minutes of baseball at least in all the games that Papelbon appears in.

Two years also gives Bobby enough time to decide if he wants to continue managing from a long-term standpoint, now that his managing career is in its fourth decade. The game can certainly wear you down, and this may give both sides time to decide if he’s only worth managing those 324 games.

Can’t help but think that this marriage between Bobby V and the Red Sox is doomed to failure. It would seem from the piece that the Red Sox have already planned for Bobby’s replacement. This is just my opinion but Bobby may have been so desperate to get back into managing that he would have and did accept any terms.

Makes you wonder if that was a condition with any of the other people they interviewed and why 1 or more may have withdrawn their names from consideration.
