Buehrle’s probably a better value, but he doesn’t project to give you anywhere near the production. His postseason numbers aren’t that much better than Wilson’s, and, if you believe that the tiny sample of postseason numbers are predictive, then you might take note of the fact that Wilson was excellent in 2010 in the postseason, and that Buehrle was terrible the last time he made it there.

Wilson also goes deep into games and stays healthy. There’s really nothing that Buehrle does better than Wilson (other than pitch faster, which, sadly, has nothing to do with pitching better). And there are many, things that Wilson does way better. Chief among them: get batters out.

This worship of Mark Buehrle is insane. He’s a middle of the rotation starter who people love because he puts the ball in play and pitches quickly, but he’s not someone I’d want my team giving a four-year deal to.

Wilson’s probably going to outproduce Buerhle in 2012. The question is will the production be worth the price? In fairness, however, that’s the question for all free-agents.

The fact that Buerhle cost half as much and will give you almost the same production. And he’s been much better in the postseason than Wilson has. Buerhle goes deep into ball games and stays healthy. He may not strike out as many batters as CJ will, but he’s crafty and gets the job done.

I’m not sure but I can’t find in the piece if it means 6 years guaranteed. Or possibly 5 years with an option year?

Oh, if he’s just saying that Buehrle’s a better value, then that’s a reasonable argument.

@lardin: Each of Wilson’s two years as a starter has each been better than any year Buehrle’s ever pitched. I think it’s a pretty foolish idea to prefer a guy who’s been a solid #3/#4 for many years over a guy who’s been a #1/#2 the last two years.
