Besides Chiti there were some other players that were traded for themselves (so not that unique):

John MacDonald (7/22/05 and 11/10/05)
Archie Corbin (11/20/92 and 2/5/93)
Mark Ross (12/9/85 and 3/31/86)
Dickie Noles (9/22/87 and 10/23/87)
Clint Courtney (1/24/61 and 3/14/61)

Tim Cullen and Ron Hansen were actually traded for each other twice in the same season between the white sox and washington senators in 1968.

Agreed. Last season the Spawrts Tork Raydeeo waves were gagged with fans calling in to propose trades for Hanley to any number of other teams, a lot of hostility and a lot of feeling fed up with his pouting, whining and hot-dogging. By the end of the season the show hosts were chiming in on it too. Hanley had come close to burning his bridges with the fans by the time he went in for surgery to clear up his “non-structural” shoulder damage. Given his minimal contribution afield last season, if he’s going to play the schlemozzel now, he’s not going to leave any mourners behind if the Feesh boot his nates out of the division.

The big problem with dumping the Hanster right now, of course, is his shoulder. If he wants to go someplace that matters, he’s going to have to have, at the very least, an excellent spring because after a winter of splurging like this the Feesh aren’t going to have much of an appetite for eating a big gout of his remaining contract.

Poor little Hanley is ‘distraught’?!

What a crock of bull-puckey.

Ever since he signed his $40+ million contract extension his performance has deteriorated markedly and his personality now resembles that of a petulant, over-paid, self-absorbed (did I leave anything out?) child.

He needs to butch-up and shut-up. The fact is he is not the center of the universe nor is he the leader of this team. If ownership is keeping their word (though knowing the Marlins they will keep everyone for a year and then trade them) and trying to bring in high-priced and powered talent all Hanley should care about is the opportunity to contribute no matter what it takes.

What’s he going to do if the team signs Albert Pujols? Jump off the Miami River bridge?

Puhleaze….grow up Hanley ya spoiled dope.

Hanley was given the chance to be the face of this franchise and he blew it last year. If he can’t handle the move to 3b then he can move out of state. The Marlins have a solid core of young players and I’m sure we’d be just fine without him.

For some reason I’ve expected he will end up back with the Sox. It would be intersting if he was traded for Beckett (won’t happen) Are there any historians who can cite a trade where a player was traded for another player – and then – after a period of years was traded back for the same player? I can’t think of any.

Who exactly are the “baby aces,” as you call them? Cliffy and Doc? Surely not. Hamels? No way Ruben would do that. Oswalt isn’t on the roster at the moment, and I highly doubt NinJr. would sign him just to ship him to Gator’s country. Worley? Don’t think the third place ROY would go. Blanton? Maybe, but a “baby ace” he is not.

JRoll’s still got something in the tank—whether it’s more than three years is debatable. Pence is not a leadoff guy—the Hawaiian is and should be. I haven’t made up my mind on Polly yet, but I’m leaning toward giving him a shot, and have no interest whatsoever in the Tweetmeister, especially since Nix and Mayberry will be the likely platoon in left.

But as CJ said, your handle is dead on.

Easily the dumbest trade I have heard in a long time. And Pence is not a lead off guy. Victorino is a lead off guy, and would get that honor if Jimmy doesn’t return (He should get it even IF Jimmy comes back)

I was hoping for the fish to need to shed hanleys salary if they got Albert and the cripple. Then I was think Dom brown , polanco and one of the baby aces for Hanley and lomo. To me this trAde would help both teams. The fish get a 3 rd basemen who when healthy can be good, and lomo and brown both get. New starts with new teams.

This would also allow the phills to get rid Rollins who IMO is the most overrated value in baseball. Yeah he still is a great fielder but he had been awful for the lat 2 years hitting. Hanley would give the phills a guy who can hit anywhere from 2-5 in the order and would allow pence to lead off as he is the closest to being a lead off style guy

It’s not as if the Feesh have a choice at this point. Until the Hanster proves that his shoulder is healed and/or that he can play back up to the level of performance we got used to prior to Scrooge McLoria blighting his career with that accursed amulet to open the 2010 season, they aren’t going to be able to move him without gagging down most of his remaining contract anyway. So, this is all a nifty little traffic in weasel words.

And third base is still a very bad idea.
