First, not true, or even close.

Second, I didn’t hire anyone to do a job and then get in his way at every turn.

If you hire someone to do a job…then let them do it….if you don’t have sufficient confidence in them that you have to constantly meddle, then you shouldn’t have hired them….and you sure as hell shouldn’t fire them for failure if you keep stepping on their toes.

Many good hitters have been terrible hitting coaches. The fact that he hasn’t had a coaching job in 15 years might say something. (Or it might not; maybe he just hasn’t wanted to coach again until now?) And Valentine is not running the show.

To me the process should be, let’s hire the best guy to be the GM and then get out of his way and let him do his job….you know…because we think is he the most qualified to do it. Similarly, if they just spent a month massaging the narrative to hire Valentine and they believe he is the best man to manage the team, then let the guy do the job you just hired him for….by letting him pick his own coaches.

It seems to me that the organization should desire an approach that starts with “what are we looking for from each particular coach?” then “what qualifications should applicants have to indicate that they will fit what we are looking for?” and lastly “who should we consider interviewing?” If the process is “It would be nice to employ Bill Buckner so let’s see where we can fit him in,” then management should disagree with Valentine’s suggestion.
