Might not be a bad gamble, depending on the money. He is only 34 yet. His WHIP took a bad beating last year, but he was hurt a lot and the other stats were pretty good. He has bounced back from back and groin problems in the past. I would offer him #2-#3 money for one year with an option to come back. He will probably turn it down, but nothing lost.

The man likes to win. Hate to give up on guys like him when they might have a couple of years left in them.

Lohse is more tradeable, he had a good year last year. If he was a FA, a 1 yr deal for $11M would be seen as team friendly, since a pitcher in his situation would be looking for 3 years.

Westbrook was beyond horrible last year (though I forgave all of that when he pitched a scoreless 11th in game 6 of the WS) and has no trade value whatsoever.

I would also pass on Oswalt, old pitchers with bad backs are to be avoided....the odds of such a beast being healthy in the playoffs is near zero.

This scenario doesn't surprise me. I was hoping it would be Westbrook to go, but maybe they can ship him out too and latch onto Berkman's buddy Oswalt. That would make quite the starting rotation. It does make some sense if Buehrle and Oswalt would sign for 3 and 2 years respectively. Then the Cards could ease in Miller and Martinez as the others age. A pipe dream sure, but hey crazier hopes have already been realized in 2011.
