Cashman has been holding onto his top prospects for the last couple years now…yet the Yankees still won the AL East with a cobbled-together pitching staff (and a subpar AJ and Hughes pitching). As if he is going to give up those same prospects for a middle-of-the-road guy like Danks. He was unwilling to give up any prospects for Johan Santana just a few years back…and Santana, when healthy, is a much more attractive guy than Danks…at least he was back when the deals were unfolding.

No, Kenny…you can keep Danks and your ridiculous trade demands. Cashman will laugh all the way through the next several years, when his starting rotation will be CC, Nova, Banuelos, Betances and Hughes (or maybe some other low-cost mid-level starter willing to take less to be a part of the next Yankee dynasty).

If Banuelos becomes just a Danks level pitcher, we have to scrap our entire scouting and player development programs here in NY. Kenny Williams is on crack. How about Cervelli for danks AND thornton. And we’ll throw in a Jeter game used autographed jockstrap.

Projection and team control. Banuelos was twenty years old last year in AA, pitching against the top prospects in baseball, most of whom were a couple years older than him (most top prospects don’t go to AAA). While his walk rates last year were troublesome, he strikes people out and keeps the ball in the park. While John Danks would obviously help the Yankees more next year, it’s the only year he’s still under team control, and if Joel Sherman’s sources are correct, the Yankees need to be under $189 million at least once in the ’14-’16 seasons, as the repeat-offender penalty on the luxury tax is finally significant enough to deter them. Having someone like Banuelos in the rotation making nothing would go a long, long way to assuring the Yankees can get under that number while remaining one of the best teams in the league.

Further, the Yankees probably have a deep enough system to make a competitive offer on Danks without even touching Montero or Banuelos.

because hes 20 years old in AAA, left handed and throws in the mid 90′s and his projected to be a front of the Rotation starter.

Think Billy Wagner in his prime, but with more than one off speed pitches, Or Johan Santana with better velocity.

I agree that Montero is asking a lot but why is Banuelos alone too much?

I’m looking at B-R and I see Banuelos had a 1.85 K/BB ratio and a 1.527 WHIP in 110.2 AA innings (15.1 were in 2010), and a 1.63 K/BB ratio and 1.602 WHIP in 43.1 AAA innings in 2011.

Danks had a 2.93 K/BB ratio and a 1.304 WHIP in 170.1 innings in the majors in 2011.

I don’t understand the notion Banuelos is too much. What is the chance Banuelos becomes a Danks? Is it higher than 20%?

The Yanks wouldn’t trade either player straight up for Danks. With a offer like that, the White Sox are probably still a little sore over the Wilson Betemit and Jeff Marquez for Nick Swisher and Boone Logan trade a few years back.
