Outdoorwomen: Well stated. However, I will say that I completely appreciate someone wanting to be fairly compensated. Specifically…if you are the better than everyone else…I can fully understand wanting to be paid accordingly. I can also appreciate that he has grossly overperformed his previous contracts. In fact…re-uping early and leaving monies on the table. So…I can understand that he now wants to be paid accordingly as this is likely his final contract. With this in mind…what I will NOT accept is him leaving to an also ran. He has consistantly stated…numerous times over the last several years that winning (and WS titles) are most important to him. Further, he has stated he already has enough monies to take care of his family forever. Therefore, if he leaves it better be to a year-in-year out contender.
Otherwise, he is a lying sellout. If he proves to being a lying sellout…the first time his team comes to Busch I will be thrown out of the stadium.

Paper: I gotta admit…after his comments in regards to AP not playing 100 games and he certainly isn’t worth what he is asking drivel I quit reading his post. Sooo…we are supposed to release our Pitching staff to stock up on pitching. A pitching staff who just went toe-to-toe with 3 of the best staffs a team could ask for and ultimately won the World Series. A World Series mind you…with the staff Ace out all year. Hahaha!

Duffer: So you don’t follow the game much huh? Only play 100 games? Do yourself a favor and take a look at his numbers. While doing so ALSO take a look at his Gold Glove Defense AND number of stolen bases every year. Yep…stolen bases. If memory serves…he led the team a few years back. “Not worth what he is asking.” Again…take a look at the numbers. Specifically…the existing salaries.
As Bobby Cox stated (he is a well respected future Hall of Fame Manager who Managed the Braves for years)…”if Ryan Howard is worth 25 Million a year Albert Pujols is worth 50 Million per year.” Please do your homework prior to piping off. Otherwise, your ignorance is illustrated.
Please know I mean NO disrespect to my use of the word ignorance.
It is defined as “not informed.”

Paper: I agree completely.
But I CAN fault AP if he leaves and it is NOT to a perennial contender.
After all…”The money isn’t the most important thing.” “My family is already taken care of.” “I want to win, be competitive every year, consistently make the playoffs and have a chance to compete for the World Series on a regular basis.”
These quotes are why I never bought into the Cubs, Nationals (or previously anyway) the Marlins.
I guess we shall see if he is a Man of his word.
Because if he is…then it’s St. Louis, Texas or (maybe) Anaheim.
Am I missing anyone else?
Obviously exlcuding those who are already locked into extension contracts with their overpaid 1st Basemen.

People are worth what someone is willing to pay for him. How much money will he bring to the team? How many games can he win for a team? Etc. Worth is a realitive term. You can not say no one is worth X. A person is worth a lot at times, and nothing at other times. In this case, I think that 22 mil is too much, but I could be wrong. It is only because of his poor health at times and the possibility that he is wearing out; visa vie last season. I think the risk is high that he will not repeat the great years he had with the Cardinals. If I am wrong and he bats .340 with 40 HR and 130 RBI’s, he is worth 22 Mil, and maybe more.

I’ll put this as nicely as I can, you don’t need to say stupid things to make your point.

Pujols has played at least 143 games every year of his 11 yr career, but magically he will now be lucky to play 100?

The Cardinals have already spent money on pitching, the rotation is full…so they would need to get rid of some of it to spend money on pitching.

AND…the Cardinals are LOADED with high up-side starters in the minors, three of which profile as #1/2 starters.

Saying that signing Pujols to a 10 yr deal is crazy, is reasonable…you don’t have to resort to 12 kinds of stupidity to make the point.

This is just Friggin’ Nuts……………….there is ABSOLUTELY NO ONE, worth 22 million dollars a year…………….The only people I can think of who should even be considered for anything like that amount is the dortor(s) who really figure out the cuase and cure for such deveastating diseases as Cancer, Dimentia, and AIDS. No wonder ths stands are half empty, in most major sports………….no one can afford the ticket prices that have to be charged to pay for such ludicrous salaries………..

I’ve been a StL fan for well over 40 years. We travelled to see you make history in Arlington as you pummeled our Texas Rangers 16 to 7 in October. You have been one of my 10 year old son’s favorite players for as long as I can remember. If 22 million per year isn’t enough for your ego, please don’t let the door hit you on your gluteus maximus on the way out of Busch Stadium (that’s your ass, in case you don’t understand human anatomy).

There are countless fans that will just chalk your actions up to pure greed, and I, for one, will be in that crowd. How much money is enough? Honestly, with unemployment and hard times everywhere you look, what the heck can you spend that much money on? When we will stop putting athletes on pedestals? You, along with many of your peers, have proven that it truly is “all about the money.”

If you leave arguably the most baseball-loving city in the nation, it will be YOUR loss, not theirs. You should be ashamed of yourself. With 99% of the U.S. population making less money in their lifetimes than you do IN ONE YEAR, we don’t have a whole lot of sympathy for you. Guess my sons’ two Pujols StL jerseys will be put out for recycling.

Thank goodness we still have a role model in Josh Hamilton.

Pujols will be lucky if he plays 100 games next year and the years following. And he certainly isn’t worth the money he’s after. Spend the money on pitching and their chances of returning to the playoffs would increase.

What many of you are failing to get is that if the Marlins get Albert, his value added to the team pays for his entire $200 million+ contract in the first three years. Attendance will more than double, and the added advertising and in-game revenues (which they FINALLY get to keep in the new stadium) brought in due to his addition will more than cover the additional salary expense. It’s actually really smart. Who cares if he even plays after the first few years? He would have already paid fro himself by then.

Not true, if Pujols leaves it will be a big deal. He is an iconic player, similar to Musial and Gibson for the previous generation, he is a player fans want to see be a Cardinal for life….if it isn’t, it will be a big deal and his legacy in StL will be quite different.

….and players like Pujols most certainly do not come and go…he is an all-time great….there is a reason they call them all-time greats, and it isn’t because they come around often.

Don’t worry. I’m sure none of these contracts have no-trade clauses so they’ll be shipped off in a couple of years after Miami wins the WS.

I’m sure teams will be happy to take on those contracts just like they are all trying to give the Cubs a couple of top prospects for Soriano .
