Twins scribes want Kevin Slowey’s guts on a stick

For an outsider like me, it’s hard to see just what it is about Kevin Slowey that causes all of the bulging neck veins at the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. But it seems like the entire Twins press box is rejoicing his departure in this morning’s trade with the Rockies.

Here’s Jim Souhan’s take:

Slowey, we hardly knew ye.  Oh, wait, yes we did. That’s why Twins traded the jerk for a boiled hot dog and a used spit cup.

Souhan later followed the comment with a note about how last year Slowey told Joe Mauer he “didn’t have to be accountable, didn’t have to talk about injuries.”

Which is what a lot of this comes down to: people don’t like people who make their jobs more difficult.

John Shipley of the St. Paul Pioneer Press also had some unflattering twitter comments, since redacted.

The only real surprise about today’s trade is that it took so long to happen. Slowey had been in the doghouse for at least a year, and while he might have had a little trade value last winter, the Twins pretty much gave him away now. Colorado isn’t the right place for Slowey to turn his career around, given that he’s a pretty extreme flyball pitcher, but he should benefit from the new start in more ways than one.

He was a jerk and the Twins screwed him around a bit but Slowey had a chance to be a pro and instead whined and cried. They let him start quite a bit late in the year and when the pitching coach or manager would come out he wouldn’t look at them in the eye. Thats classy.

Souhan is an idiot. This Slowey situation reminds me of how Garza left town.

Exactly. Souhan frequently (constantly) has his head up his ass and should never be used as a barometer for anything.

I disagree in the aspect that the Twins did screw around with Garza and he wasn’t a jerk and didn’t complain about every little thing where as Slowey has and its not just Souhan that says he is a jerk.

Just because Slowey may or not have acted like a jerk doesn’t excuse Souhan’s behavior.

I agree that Slowey seemed disgruntled, but remember how the local media guys like Souhan bashed Garza too. I do remember a few articles (some by Souhan) about how Garza wasn’t coachable and kept wanting to do his own thing.

This is what pisses me off. The Twins Cities media could move on from this, but they’re still angry at Slowey.

As far as I’m concerned, it was the Twins and the media that handled this poorly. Slowey told the coaches that he didn’t want to be a reliever, and they got mad at him, and the media turned him into a scapegoat.

Colorado is a terrible place for him to be as a flyball pitcher, but I hope he’s treated better over there than he was in Minnesota.

If there’s been one constant throughout the years, it’s that the Twins don’t like someone that doesn’t fill their mold of “what being a Twin means.” Garza, Loshe, O-Cab, Hudson, Young, Perkins (who had to crawl back for forgiveness), and now Slowey (to name a few) all rocked the boat just a little too much for Burl Ives’ taste.

The Twin Cities media is the WORST in the nation. I’m a huge fan of the teams in Minnesota but if you’d read the media or listen to the TV media as well, you’d think you were in a city of the competiton to our teams. They seem to relish in the failures of the teams and its players. These media people have no loyalty to the teams they write or report on. I rarely read anything from the Trib or Pioneer but get my info through Bleacher Report or KFAN. I don’t want the other extreme of the media in Wisconsin that follows the Packers, they are afraid to report anything negative ie. the two players this year of the Packers who are in domestic abuse situations….brushed under the rug. Nuetral is all I ask.

I have a hard time having any sympathy for whiny vindictive local media members.

Better watch out Souhan… Slowey’s dad might be waiting for you in the parking lot.

Souhan is a hack when it comes to Twins coverage. It is the norm for his columns to be ill-informed and short-sighted. They are just the typical second-guessing of management–with the Twins there are plenty of legitimate gripes to address–with no real viable alternatives proposed. Souhan’s MO, at least as far as his MLB coverage is concerned, is to just produce incendiary drivel that piques the interest/outrage towards management of the casual baseball fan and is written off as utter nonsense by anyone who actually follows the team.
