UPDATE: Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe speculates that the two sides had a handshake agreement in place for Wheeler to decline arbitration–and basically give the Red Sox a free draft pick–which makes sense considering the trouble he may have topping $3.5 million or so elsewhere.

“and basically give the Red Sox a free draft pick”-Isn’t this a loophole that should be closed, not sure you could ever prove it and I know its a sandwhich pick but teams at the top of the 2nd round will have a couple less better guys to pick from. Again I doubt MLB could do anything about but i am sure they aren’t thrilled when there are reports like this.
