It's a dick move because he wasn't going to accept, which is why they did it. Remember, they re-worked his contract last year to essentially make him a free agent - when they could have simply vested him and guaranteed his return for 2012 - but when he realized the market for his services wasn't nearly as rosy as he / his representation assumed, he pulled an 11th hour move to accept.

This caused MKE to table offers to Saito and essentially Hawkins as well. It may very well also impact their ability to sign Ramiraz or Rollins.

So yes, if they did indeed have an arrangement, then it's a dick move.. If it was a gamble on MKE's part - which I highly doubt was the case without some assurances from K-Rod's side - then it was a brutal gamble.

IIRC, if they go all the way through the arbitration process, the contract is not guaranteed; that is, they can release him at some point before Opening Day and only owe him a portion (1/6th?) of the salary that was awarded by the arbitrator. My memory may be faulty, though, and it's also possible that it's changed with the new CBA.

It's still dead money if they go that route, but if they only owe him $2-ish million it's not that bad if they really don't want him around.

What a dick move by K-Rod

Here's hoping the Crew can trade him....because now, they can't sign either a shortstop, 3B, or a 1B.
