Right now, there’s a difference. Fielder is morbidly obese, by medical definition. Loss of speed and range of motion are the least of his concerns. He’s a textbook candidate for diabetes and heart disease. Regardless of his vegan diet. Furthermore, it should be expected that all of his joints, hips, knees and ankles will have to fail at some point. And the prospects of spinal problems is astronomically high. He may get by for another 2-3 years. Anything beyond that is an unreasonable risk for any team to undertake, IMHO. MLB has a sad history of players with “bad bodies” declining prematurely. Precedent has already been established.

Saying David Ortiz is anywhere close to being as fat as Prince Fielder is an insult to Ortiz. I love Fielder, but DAMN he’s got a lot of weight on Papi, who is actually pretty damn svelte since his knee injuries cleared up. I woulda preferred a comparison to Dmitri Young with his name rolling around lately, but even he’s gotten skinny

Why would they not be in on Fielder after chasing so hard for an older Pujols who might only have half the good years that Fielder has left? Yeah he’s fat but he’s very athletic as opposed to a fat David Ortiz who can barely move. There’s a difference.

They can’t afford him. They dropped out of the pujols deal because they found out part of what they offered albert wasn’t legal in terms of the new collective bargaining agreement. incentives based on attendance and profitability – that’s a no-no.
