From MLB Network’s Jon Heyman comes word that free agent right-hander Ryan Madson has decided to decline the Phillies’ offer of arbitration.

Madson is a Type A free agent, so by rejecting the offer he will net the Phillies two compensatory draft picks when he signs with a different team.

The 31-year-old posted a dominant 2.37 ERA and 62/16 K/BB ratio in 60 2/3 innings this past year for Philadelphia, converting 32 saves in 34 opportunities. The Red Sox have expressed some interest in making him Papelbon’s replacement, but it doesn’t sound like a deal is close.

I thought the new CBA changed compensation for relief pitchers.

Heard Stark on the Fanatic this afternoon and he said it is pretty clear that Bor-ass screwed over Madsen pretty good. Thought he would take the Arbitration because there is nobody left who is going to give a closer more than the 9-10 million he would have gotten in arbitration. I feel for the Mad Dog. Wish he had accepted arb, then next year, when there are no big closers on the market, he could have gotten his bigger contract. Now he will probably scratch out a year at 6-8 million with another team.

If he accepts arbitration and Papelbon is the closer would not his value drop after next season?

I think once the Phillies signed Papalbon, Madson was history. The question is which team with the resources needs a closer? Top of the list, .. the RS.

Wow, .. can the RS afford two draft picks? The farm system is pretty thin as it is.

      What are you talking about?

I gotta say I kinda wish the Red Sox had just thrown a PTBNL at the Rockies for Huston Street and let him be closer, cause we would have saved the 1st round pick that it will cost to bring in madson.
