Lackey, yes. Crawford, no. The 1st year being bad in a 7-year deal doesn’t make the whole contract a bust. Crawford is young enough and still has 6 years left on the deal to perform like his old self. I wouldn’t call his a “terrible contract” just yet.

Hey Len get a grip. AJ is not that bad. He can be dominant at times. Joba is going to be a big factor in 2012 and will be great for the Yankees, Joba is just26 years old, he hasn’t reached his prime yet. Be patient with him.

Now you see what is wrong with huge contracts and guaranteed contracts and multiyear contracts. The GMs and Owners have to come up with hundreds of millions of dollars for players they and the fans don’t want.
The baseball salary system is so bloated and ridiculous that it is never going to be fixed without a huge lockout for a very long time.

They need to do what the Cubs and Mariners did when Bradley and Silva were traded for each other. Hope a change of scenery gives you a little more value than sticking with the player you have.

Actually, I’d probably prefer Zambrano simply because he’s owed the least amount of money and his contract is over the soonest, although realistically you’re right that AJ is the least useless to the Yanks right now, and his contract is over before the Yanks reported payroll D-Day.

I disagree, Craig. Whoever gets AJ Burnett at two years, $25 million is paying market rate for an elite reliever without having to commit long-term to him. And ultimately, I think that’s what happens to AJ – he winds up at the back end of somebody’s bullpen. Realistically, it’s the Yanks’ in 2013 when they have five superior options in the rotation, but anybody thinking about acquiring him should be considering him in that context, IMO.

I like that idea. But From a Yankees persepective I would rather have Burnett then any of those players. AJ has better stuff than Zito, the Yankees dont need Bay, Soriano or Rios. Zambrano is a head case. At the very least AJ will give you innings with the occaisonal dominant start. Hes definately not worth what hes paid, but As a four or five starter you could do worse. Hes not a malcontent or a bad clubhouse presence like Zambrano. In fact when there was a disagreement with Giradi last year, he went out of way to praise Giradi for sticking by him and his inconsistencies. If he was paid 5 million a year, every single team would want him, but hes paid 16.5million a year

The GM’s from these teams should throw those names into a hat, each pick one, and stick with whoever they get.

There’s plenty of other bad contracts out there that the Yankees could swap Burnett for. For example, they could probably obtain Jason Bay for Burnett straight up, with the Yanks kicking in cash to even it out. Bay in this scenario would replace Andruw Jones on the roster with a younger pitcher replacing Burnett.
