C'mon Blue Jays! Add this guy to that rotation and you have: Ricky Ramirez, Brandon Morrow, Gio Gonzalez, Wilson Alvarez and Dustin McGowan with Brett Cecil to the pen along with Young Drabek (both of whom can pitch long relief or fill rotation spots). McGowan, Alverez and Gonzalez could either of them be the # 3 guy based on last year's work. What a great rotation to throw out there.

Yup, people can bash prospect deals any way they want, but in the end you need a lot of them to have just a handful pay off so any time a non-competitive team can flip a guy and get 4-6 high end ones in return they have got to pull the trigger.

The A's are absolutely looking for a Dan Haren deal here. They view his last two seasons (age 24 and 25) as indicative, averaging 201 innings, 3.17 ERA, and WHIP of 1.315. I don't have the park-adjusted stats handy, but the overall combination of age, durability, and performance is high-value.

The Haren trade of "Dan Haren and Connor Robertson to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for left-handed pitchers Brett Anderson, Dana Eveland and Greg Smith, infielder Chris Carter and outfielders Aaron Cunningham and Carlos Gonzalez." (A's press release) what jumps out is Anderson and Car-Go. Carter is still with the club, Cunningham is in SD, and Eveland and Smith went to COL with Car-Go for Matt Holliday, who the A's turned for (eventually) Michael Taylor.

Ultimately did the A's "win" that deal? A lot depends on how well Anderson comes back from TJ. It looks like they came up way short on the Holliday for Car-Go end of the stick.

But the point in getting prospects is that you can't be sure who will make it in the majors, so you get the highest number of high-upside guys you can, leavened with some roster fillers.

It what the A's want to do, anyway. We'll see if anyone wants to dance with them for Gio. That BB/9 that lembeck cited above is very un-Haren like. And that will be an issue.

I came into this thread ready to gripe about the hype for this guy and his home/away splits but they really weren't all that bad. That has to be a concern though with him not getting most of his starts at The Coliseum. Of course, not having the Athletics offense to rely on will make a difference.

Hype away, I guess?
