Ivan Rodriguez won’t re-sign with Nationals, eyes backup role

Agent Scott Boras told reporters at the winter meetings yesterday that Ivan Rodriguez won’t be re-signing with the Nationals, saying: “I think their plan at the moment excludes him.”

Rodriguez backed up Wilson Ramos this year, but the Nationals still have Jesus Flores around and there are a couple intriguing catcher prospects coming up through the minors.

As for where the future Hall of Famer may wind up, Boras indicated that Rodriguez will be looking for a backup role and “there are still a number of teams that are evaluating him and that situation.”

Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post speculates that the Marlins could be a fit, as Rodriguez won a World Series there in 2003 and could play sparingly behind starter John Buck.

I’d love to have him backup in KC!

The Nationals loved his defense, but his offense suffered. Jesus Flores though wasn’t much better so i wouldn’t be surprised if another backup is signed or someone else from the minors is promoted. Sad to see him go though, still an amazing defensive catcher.

Pudge, thanks for your contributions the past couple of seasons, and best wishes. As for Flores, he was a useful hitter before his injuries; hopefully, he can get back to being a useful hitter.

Angels fans may be happy, but I bet Twins fans are the happiest of all this offseason. We already found a backup catcher which means no more Drew Butera!

If you think I’m delusional for being more excited over a backup catcher than Albert freaking Pujols then you just don’t understand what it means to be a fan.

Orioles could use a quality backup to Matt Wieters.
