The Feesh don’t need a first baseman – certainly not one whose name isn’t Pujols. Gaby will do just fine. He’s young, inexpensive, and he’s already very good and getting better. They’ve said they’re not interested in Fielder and they have no reason to be. If they lose CJ to California – I mean as in home sweet home, not the Angels in particular – they’re still a whole new ballclub from the one that walked in the door on Sunday.

There is still an entire weenter and spreeng to make trades and pick up available free agents. There’s still the kind of plug-in talent left out there that can be the missing piece(s) for a contender. They’ve done the planting. Now let’s see if Beinfest’s still got it as a pruner and shaper.

Heyman being Boras’ shill is true enough. But some reasons to believe it anyway:

1. If the Marlins miss out on Pujols, they can get Fielder with 60% of the money spent. And they seem to REALLY want to spend money. And in some ways, Fielder’s less or a risk than Pujols, since he’d only require signing for ages 28-33 or so, instead of 32-41.

2. Because his agent is, indeed, Scott Boras, Fielder is likely to take the biggest offer, regardless of team, ballpark, etc.
