Ya it’s a business thing. That’s the ticket. When I got my lowball offer on my house that had been on the market for a year, my realtor keep saying it was just business. She kept saying that but all I heard was “you’re getting screwed, you’re getting screwed”. She got her commission and I got screwed.

I am a Cards fan, I have not a hint of bitterness towards Albert at all. I thank him for all the wonderful memories and the championships and postseason appearances. I wish him the best of luck. The Cards simply got outbid by a wealthier team and I’m okay with that. The Cards will be move on and be a good team without him. Admittedly though, it will be quite surreal not seeing #10 and #5 in the dugout on Opening Day.

If he said it and meant it, then why the hell wouldn’t he just play for free? Why have any contract negotiation at all? The Cardinals certainly don’t make the playoffs in ’11 without Pujols and they’re probably a sub-.500 team without him in ’06. Also his career OPS in the playoffs is roughly eight squintillion.

Now even I have to comment here. From a Cubs fan, really? Just because you guys get soaked all the time, doesn’t mean other fans in major league towns like it. The Cubs are used to losing (and liking it). We fans in the major leagues don’t like losing, and when our team develops players and they say “I love this city and will “NEVER” leave, it takes the fans aback just a bit, and leaves a bad taste in our mouths. I am personally happy to see Albert out of our league and into the AL, but I completely understand the Cards fans resentment and dismay.THEY WERE LIED TO BY THIS GUY AND HIS AGENT, PERIOD (OVER SEVERAL YEARS).

Does an extra $30 million make much of a difference to someone making $220 million? Yes, in the sense that if I want to start a business, I can take the $30 million to a bank who will then lend me an $150 million. The concept is called “leverage.” And if you don’t understand that concept, you really shouldn’t be commenting on matters of money.

I lost a lot of respect for Pujols after this. I had already lost respect for him when he decided to ask for $300 million from the Cardinals last off-season but I’ve definitely lost it for him now. I mean, sure that extra money is a lot for us normal people but when you have already had a $100 million contract and now you have a $200 million one, what do you need it for? He passes himself off as a man of the community but he really doesn’t prove it with his actions. If I’m a Cardinals fan I feel jobbed by him and I would be hoping for him to epically fail in Los Angeles. Who knows what will happen but it will definitely be interesting to monitor.

Are you honestly saying that Pujols wasn’t the biggest part of the ’06 team? You do realize Pujols was the most valuable player in baseball that year, he had more or less two above-average teammates, and his team won its division by a game and a half, right? They don’t even sniff the playoffs without him that year, and quite honestly, I doubt they make the run they made to reach the playoffs this year if he doesn’t regain his form.

I guarantee you, this town does not take treachery lightly. And whether you think what Albert did was treachery, a large number of fans will believe it to be so.
How else to characterize Albert thumbing his nose at the rich tradition he supposedly embraced here?
Reverence for Redbird history? Gone.
Allegiance to the team that gave him his start and let him be great? Dissolved.
Affection for the fans cheering his every move? Evaporated.
All that’s left: Imagining what might have been if Albert had stayed a Cardinal. Instead it is nothing short of this: So long, Stan. See ya, Gibby. Later, Lou. Ozzie, it’s been real.

Real fun, that is, til now — when Pujols joins all the other disaffected players who left St. Louis thinking they’d find a better baseball situation somewhere else.
I don’t have enough fingers on both hands to list all the Cardinals I know who left St. Louis and later regretted it, but let’s start with this short list: Vince Coleman, Jack Clark, Andy Benes, even Willie McGee and lesser lights like Fernando Vina and Jeff Suppan.
