My guess is Furcal comes in at 2 years, 13 mil, with a mutual option in year 3. Assuming the LOOGY doesn’t cost over 2.5 mil, the question remains what to do with the remaining cash, and how much is available. Beltran is going to cost 25 mil for 2 years, and I’m not sure he is worth it, plus Punto is still not corralled.

Oswalt is still out there, but then the Cards would need to trade either Westbrook or Lohse. Westbrook probably could bring a decent LOOGY, but not much more. Lohse might be the piece that could bring an OF/1B type Seth Smith or Nick Swisher, since both the Rockies and Yanks need starters. Other options include, Jason Bay(assuming the Mets eat most of his salary) Delmon Young, Ryan Ludwig, Alex Rios, Carlos Quentin and Jason Kubel.

Hard to get excited about any in that group, Young, Quentin, and Kubel can all hit, but are really DHs, and the rest all need to bounce back to prior form. Let’s face it there really aren’t a lot of options.

I will take your word about Rollins, but then the Philly phans boo so many of their own players. How are we meer mortals to know who is the favorite there? I was shocked when they didn’t boo Howard on his last at bat where he tore his Achilies (SP).

I agree about the OF situation. I like Beltran if he can be had cheap enough ($12M seems reasonable for a 2-3 yr deal)….but none of the other guys are worth the price they are asking, I’d rather see what Matt Carpenter can do…plus defense, good on-base skills, solid line-drive hitter.

Do you expect Rollins to be that much better than Furcal though? I would prefer Furcal at 2 yrs and $12M than Rollins for 3 years and $36M…and Rollins seems to be looking for more than that. Furcal’s health is the big concern, of course, but Rollins has has leg issues recently.

I guess, I don’t care which they sign….just that they sign one of them. Greene has been great in AAA and never had a legitimate shot in the Majors…but he clearly isn’t a guy that thrives as a bench player….and he’s already 28 making me suspect that he’s just a AAAA player.

PL, that is my point. Both Beltran and Rollins are going to cost about 12 mil per. But Furcal won’t come any cheaper than 6 mil. If DeWitt would allocate the dollars for both Furcal and Beltran I would prefer that route, but no other outfielder that is attractive is going to cost 6 mil, then perhaps it would be behoove the Cards to make a strategic move and take Rollins and a 3 million dollar OFer.

Yeah, Furcal has to be looking for more than 1 year and more than 5 per….look at the deals given to Barmes and Carrol….Furcal has more upside than those guys.

If Rollins was looking for anything even semi-reasonable, he’d be re-signed already.

I can’t see the Phils going after Morrison, unless they disable his Twitter account. Ownership has been careful to stay away from guys who bring drama to the clubhouse.

Utley is just about shot, Polanco is older then dirt, Howard isn’t getting any better. This is an old team. Yankees and Red Sox are younger at many key spots.

The crowd loves him? You mustn’t live here in the Philly area. The crowd “doesn’t love him”. In 2008, yes. Today, no way.
Jimmy is punk. He has made disparaging remarks about the fans on several occasions. The fans that support his team year after year.
He brags about his significant business interests and how he doesn’t need baseball money anymore. But yet he’s holding out for 5 years @ a number surely more than he’s worth
His skills are in decline, has stopped hustling, and has adopted the McNabb smirk when he he doesn’t perfrom well.
The talk shows, blog comments, and corner bar conversations regarding Jimmy have gone negative. And it has changed on merit.
That said it’s not him that’s in decline. The entire infield is too old.
Change is needed but Rube needs sellouts so he’ll keep them together until they lose their fan appeal and the sellouts stop.

I would not say a fan favorite at all. He isn’t disliked and has a small staunch supporters, but most fans realize he has run out of steam. In the last 3 yrs he has averaged 15 HR, 60 RBI with a 253 avg. Not impressive numbers for a guy who wants a 50 million dollar plus commitement.

I think Furcal is asking for a little more, and wants a two or three year deal. I might be wrong, but it is still a better deal than Rollins. However, He has been a Philly most of his career, and that may play into it. He is a fan favorite (Rollins) there right?

This makes a lot of sense. Why let him go? He is a known quantity for the Phills and the crowd loves him there. If he will accept a two or three year deal, it will be done. However, the Phills need someone to replace the big bat they will lose with Howard out for most of the year.

Well i support your statement about needing defense. However, this primarily why they need to walk away. Freddy Galvis is a better defensive player than Rollins. You will lose some power and stolen bases, but that is it. Galvis can get better, whereas Rollins will continue to detoriate.

The phllies dont have a window which is closing. With their pitching in the minors looking very strong and the financial support of the owners, the franchise simple has moved into the catagory of having a chance every single year.

I would really like them to go after Logan Morrison, whom the Marlins don’t care for. With him in left, Shane in Center and Pence in right they would be in the top 5 of outfields. No one would even realize Rollins was no longer there.

The Phillies have to keep Rollins. With great pitching you need great defense. Rollins is a very good glove. The window for the Phillies is 2-3 years tops. You keep your SS even if you have to give him 4 years.

The Cards need help in 3 areas. Because Furcal is probably going to demand at least 6 mil a year, it may be just as cheap to go after Rollins, and then fill in the remaining dollars for CF, rather than Beltran, who is questionable in CF.

Not certain there is a GM in MLB that would give Rollins a five year deal at this point. Phillies would probably sign him at something like 3 years with a club option for a fourth. Lozano is going to have to come down off that five years.
