Picture of the Day: Joe Maddon, spaghetti sauce king

Dec 11, 2011, 3:58 PM EDT

Rays manager Joe Maddon has produced a large-scale spaghetti dinner for homeless and needy folks around the Tampa Bay region since the winter of 2006. It typically takes place on a Sunday night between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and has thus been anointed the name “Thanksmas.”

Maddon isn’t your typical celebrity philanthropist. He actually gets hands-on with the projects he puts his name on, doing both fundraising and dirty work in order to see the events through.

Tonight marks the sixth annual Thanksmas at Tropicana Field, and Maddon tweeted the below picture with this caption: “Cooking for Thanksmas all day at the Trop. My favorite part? Stirring the sauce.”

Serving up wine for a good cause on Friday night (we know this thanks to David Prices urination incident).

    Feeding the homeless Saturday night.

What is not to like about this man.

    Maddon is awesome.

A great few days for Rays fans. Albert Pujols signs with the Angels (frees up 2 first basemen), Matt Moore gets locked up, David Price doesn’t get locked up, and Joe Maddon is Joe Maddon (being friggin awesome). Truthfully a proud time to be a Rays fan.

    Knowing is half the battle.

    Keep stirrin Joe!!!!

You can root against the Rays, but not Joe Madden.

What the photo doesn’t show, is that this is only the first batch. This is for the Red Sox pitchers to make Chicken Parmagiana with, and the next batch is for the homeless.

    Homeless people at the Trop.

Is ESPN filming this so they can trash this place in the offseason too?

Joe Maddon; decent person. If it were a democratic process in any way I’d vote him for next MLB commissioner. Tip O the Blue Jays hat to ya, Mr. Maddon….

Good on ya, Joe. Now just get that rapist Josh Lueke off your teams and I’ll think about respecting you.

      When did Maddon become GM?

      • JBerardi - Dec 11, 2011 at 11:16 PM

He’s in a position to do something about it. Or not do something about it. We’ll see.

I’m not sure if that Rays santa hat counts as a hair net. He better hope the Board of Health doesn’t see that pic!

Nice to see someone giving back to the community. Class act!
