This means that no matter what the label says or what your doctor says, if it’s on the prohibited list and you test positive for it, you’re guilty. Prohibited substances generally fall into the following categories: they’re either performance enhancing, drugs that mask performance enhancing drugs, drugs that aid in cycling off performance enhancing drugs, or illegal drugs of abuse (like cocaine). They’re prohibited for a reason: they either aid in performance enhancement, or are unhealthy and illegal. There are many things Braun could have taken that is technically not a performance enhancer (masking agents, for example). But they are prohibited for good cause. I do admit it’s unfair that as soon as a report comes out that says Braun tests postive for a banned substance everyone assumes his injecting straight steroids into his ass cheek, but that’s the life he’s chosen. He gets paid well, and the scrutiny, passion, emotion and unfairness comes with it. If he’s exonerated from any wrongdoing, he will suffer no baseball penalties. His reputation may suffer, but once again, that’s simply a reality of the life he has chosen.

Just because Braun may have taken what he thought was a supplement (or even just a cold remedy) does not excuse him from the ignorance of its ingredients. The product he took may not be a “traditional” PED, but one ingredient can indeed be classed as such.

Players in all the leagues have been constantly told, before you take something, clear it with the trainers and team doctors first. Better yet, players should take the responsibility of educating themselves with what’s banned and what “common” products contain them. But we all know how well players hold themselves accountable for their own actions…
