Cardinals nearing two-year deal with Skip Schumaker

Skip Schumaker is close to avoiding arbitration (and a possible non-tender) by signing a two-year contract with the Cardinals, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

Last month general manager John Mozeliak indicated that Daniel Descalso would open the season as the Cardinals’ starting second baseman, but Schumaker’s presence means at the very least he’ll likely have to fight for the gig.

Jon Jay also seems fairly entrenched as the primary center fielder, but Schumaker could give him competition as well after starting over Jay at times during the World Series run.

Schumaker has one season of arbitration eligibility remaining, so a two-year deal would buy out his first season of free agency after the 31-year-old career-long Cardinal hit .283 with two homers and a .685 OPS in 117 games.

This is not welcome news. Plus he was already making $4.7 mil on a two year deal. So I imagine he will sign for just under 3 mil a year. This seems unnecessary to me. He is a character guy, who has some versatility, and he showed signs of returning to his .300+ BA years, but he is not a good OBS dude, he has next to no power, cannot steal bases, and incomprehensibly is not a particularly good baserunner. Plus he is a below average defender at 2B. He possesses a strong arm, and has pretty good range in the OF, and can play all three positions, but he should be the LAST piece of the Cards roster if at all, and if the Cardinal management is choosing him over Punto, they have blundered again.

‘should read OBP, not OBS which could be the acronym for “Overrated, but Steady.”‘

Freaking waste of a roster spot.

Albert who? The Cards are set! With the signing of Skip, they’ve have ensured that they’ll lead the league in head-first slides into 1st base again in 2012!

In other former Cardinals outfielder news, Nick Stavinoha has signed with the Hiroshima Carp.

I’m not impressed with the reallocation process so far…

I can not convey the amount of indifference I have to this.

    What’s next, resigning Ryan Ludwick?

The Dewitt/Mozeliak masterplan is apparently in full action.

I don’t understand the “paying Skip Schumaker to play baseball” part.
