Japanese outfielder Norichika Aoki posted by Yakult Swallows

Dec 12, 2011, 10:47 AM EDT

Jon Morosi of reports that the Yakult Swallows have filed the necessary paperwork to post Japanese center fielder Norichika Aoki, as expected.

Aoki is a three-time batting champion with a career .329 average and the 29-year-old is considered a plus defender with excellent speed, so he figures to draw a decent amount of interest despite limited power.

Last week Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post reported that the Nationals could target Aoki after repeatedly failing to trade for a veteran center fielder like B.J. Upton or Denard Span.

As part of the posting process, MLB teams will submit bids for exclusive negotiating rights to Aoki and then must work out a separate contract with the center fielder.

More Shinjo than Ichiro. Still – he’d probably be a good fit patrolling CF for the Nats if the price is right.

I think the Mets should target Aoki. Even with limited funds they could use the $90+ million they tried giving Reyes to bid and sign Aoki. Torres doesn’t seem to be anything better than a 4th OFer or defensive replacent and Captain Kirk is still about a year away from contributing at the ML level. Thoughts? I remember hear awhile back the Mets did have some interest in Aoki and its obvious we could use a speedy CFer to help with Bay and Duda patrolling the corners

Note to Cubs: don’t take the bait.
