As players and coaches came in to Cinti from St. Louis, all we heard from them here is we want to build a team just like theirs. Why do you think the Reds went after Walt? The Reds thought that he was responsible for building that team, however the worst thing was that you can not tell the ball players they are really just like St. Louis. They know better, even when the president of the club and the announcers and the GM, said we will build another a club like them. We are constantly being fed here with “We had this thing (like St. Louis) back in the 70′s with the Big Red Machine”. We can do it again. I hate to admit it, but the magic never happened here, YET. The people have to show up for more games and the drive is to get over 3 Mil in attendance like a handful of other clubs. So the first job is to get the people here and build the same ferver for our team. that is a hard job, and NO one can just say it. It is really true (for some reason), and it is hard to duplicate it anywhere. Our fans need a winner to begin with. The Reds are not the only team to want this, but I can tell you it is an up hill battle to get there. In the 70′s, the Reds had it and let it slip away with poor management and poor play in the field. It does take winning first to start the “fan love” for the team. One can not deny this truth!

I know stating that makes you (and many others) feel better.
But the truth of the matter is…this moniker was coined over a number of years ago by players and pundits alike. With this in mind…I can appreciate the “self proclaimed” aspect of it that I keep (falsely) hearing making the moniker a little less painful/annoying for others. Human nature.
