Jimmy Rollins’ agent is talking to a mystery team

The Brewers and Cardinals settled on their shortstops over the past week, but Jimmy Rollins‘ agent is still determined to find some sort of leverage in contract negotiations with the Phillies.

With that in mind, Jayson Stark of ESPN.com reports that Rollins’ agent Dan Lozano is having “dialogue” with a second team which he has declined to identify. A mystery team, if you will. The only hint Stark offers is that other clubs believe the Tigers have interest.

Rollins’ desire for a five-year contract was unrealistic even before Alex Gonzalez joined the Brewers and Rafael Furcal returned to St. Louis, but with his market quickly drying up, he’ll almost certainly have to lower his demands. Lozano is trying to make things interesting here, but Rollins’ return to Philadelphia feels inevitable.

Mystery Team = Summer Girlfriend…Who Lives In Canada. (You insist she exists however no one has ever met her)

    • bloodysock - Dec 13, 2011 at 7:52 PM

But she did leave with a gift bag.

      • jwbiii - Dec 13, 2011 at 8:15 PM

And did it include an autographed baseball?

    • proudlycanadian - Dec 13, 2011 at 8:32 PM

It is not the Blue Jays; however, I hear that Toronto’s semi-pro “Inter County League” team may be interested.

      … or George Glass.

    Rollins to Angels!

    • cintiphil - Dec 14, 2011 at 10:54 AM

I hear the Angels have lots of money$$$

  3. bleedgreen - Dec 13, 2011 at 8:17 PM

Bullshit. Theres no other opportunities for him to leverage against the Phils, so now theres a ‘mystery team’ to try and use against RAJ. Not gonna happen. You overplayed your hand, Jimmy. Time to fold em in and take what the Ninja is offering.

    • franbotel - Dec 13, 2011 at 8:49 PM

Same was said about Pujols,” the Yankees and Red Sox are all set In 1b there is no market for him” We all know how that played out . His going to get close to what he wants this is baseball they always overpay free agents

I’m talking to a mystery team as well.

  7. Utley's Hair - Dec 13, 2011 at 9:03 PM

Um…asking a Flyers employee where the Bank is doesn’t really constitute “talking to a mystery team.”

  8. Gonzo - Dec 13, 2011 at 9:10 PM

It’s amazing that RAJ signed crappy-ass Wigginton and Nix 12 minutes after free agency started. Yet with someone like Jimmy, who can actually help the team, he is stoic.

    • Utley's Hair - Dec 13, 2011 at 9:19 PM

NinJr. really had nothing to say to JRoll while he continues to cling to that sillya$$ five year pipe dream of his.

    • paperlions - Dec 13, 2011 at 9:35 PM

Wiggington and Nix were willing to sign for super cheap, Rollins is asking for an unrealistic contract for a player of his age and skill.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Dec 13, 2011 at 10:29 PM

I don’t understand why people rag on you Paper. If anything, posters around here need to listen to you more. You consistently make valid points.

      • Jonny 5 - Dec 14, 2011 at 8:14 AM

Somebody ragged on PL, and I missed it? Damn! ;) Morning fellas.. I’m thinking the Mystery team, if it is indeed Detroit, won’t be offering Rollins more than the Phillies are. This isn’t like the Werth situation at all and the Phillies kind of still need Rollins. There aren’t better short stops on the market right right now. Unless they trade for a decent SS the Phills kinda need Jimmy back.

  9. natsattack - Dec 13, 2011 at 9:40 PM

Wiggington was traded for, not signed, Nix signed for 2yrs, 2.5 mil as a bench player.

    • Gonzo - Dec 13, 2011 at 10:02 PM

      I stand corrected.

  10. delsj - Dec 14, 2011 at 8:26 AM

Mystery team is supposedly the Tigers.

  11. snowbirdgothic - Dec 14, 2011 at 8:29 AM

From what we’ve read about Lozano, it’s probably the Gambino family softball team.

To his credit, Lozano has put together a Boras-style “book” for J-Roll. Unfortunately, it’s a pop-up book.

    • Jonny 5 - Dec 14, 2011 at 8:45 AM

Well played….. He said Pop up book. Too funny.

  12. watermelon1 - Dec 14, 2011 at 8:42 AM

ORIOLES! Just kidding. They don’t be interested until he’s age 45.

    • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Dec 14, 2011 at 8:57 AM

And Brian Sabean thinks that’s too young to get involved!

  13. churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Dec 14, 2011 at 9:01 AM

In all seriousness, shame the Mets are having such financial issues. They need a SS after Reyes left, and signing Rollins would have the double effect of weakening the Phillies as well.

    • cur68 - Dec 14, 2011 at 9:39 AM

This. Put butts in seats, too: the drama alone of Phillys vs Mets featuring JRoll at NY short? I’d go see that.

    • mojosmagic - Dec 14, 2011 at 11:20 AM

The Mets fans are being cheated and should stop going to games and make the Wilpons cry uncle.

  14. cintiphil - Dec 14, 2011 at 10:57 AM

He is going to stay in Philly. Who else would take a chance on him at his salary level? And at least the Phills will be set up the middle. And, why not pay the guy a little reward for past performance? Isn’t that what the Angels did for Albert?

  15. mojosmagic - Dec 14, 2011 at 11:17 AM

The only mystery is why would any team give Rollins 5 years and 60 million which is what his agent is shooting for. The Phillies have offered Rollins 3 years and around 40 million which is by far better then any other team. Knowing Ruben he might pull the offer if Rollins agent continues to balk. They could replace Rollins offense by signing Cudeyer and trade for a one year stop gap at SS until Freddie Gavis is ready.
