You’re kidding, right? Ownership pushed out Francona largely because the clubhouse was out of control, but they’re going to make a coach out of the guy who wore the C? Can’t see that happening.

While I don’t place as much weight on the beer and fried chicken as many people do, it was Tek’s responsibility to tell those guys to knock it off. We don’t know whether he did or not, but either way, it reflects badly on him – either the guys didn’t respect him enough to listen to him, or he just didn’t care enough to be a leader.

Varitek hasn’t been good for a few years, and couldn’t throw a runner out at 2nd if his life depended on it. Honestly walking away from this guy should of happened 2-3 years ago.

Oh, they’ve got a spot for him, and the position is called Bench Coach. You can’t tell me Tek wouldn’t be good at it, and it’s not like Bobby V wouldn’t be burned at the stake if the proposal was made public and he shot it down.

Does anyone know if he went vacationing with Big Papi down in the Dominican? If he did, maybe the Sox figure he’ll go back to his 2003-05 numbers.

To be fair, it doesn’t say HOW he will be in the picture. It may well be within the organization but not the MLB roster.

Aviles’ versatility might allow them to carry three catchers. And Varitek would not cost them that much.

Craig, I agree entirely with your conclusion. Also when you consider the Red Sox stated desire to remain at/near or below the luxury tax threshold, Veritek is a luxury the Red Sox can least afford and he would take up a needed roster spot. I just don’t see them offering him a million or two to hang around and do nothing.
