I don’t see them making a play for Rollins. If anything the Braves could use a veteran SS for this year but nothing more.

We all know Jimmy wants the big payday and he is going to get a good on, if he plays great in the 3 year deal he will get another solid deal after that. He isn’t Reyes at this stage of his career but Reyes isn’t worth that deal he got either.

I’d rather he didn’t run out the pop flies or the easy groundouts. He’s already had leg issues, why risk making it worse busting out of the box every time the ball’s put in play? Jimmy will always run when it matters. If he thinks he has a triple off the bat or can beat out an infield hit, he will do so. If he makes an out the .01% of the time the second baseman bobbles the ball, oops. I’d rather have him return to the bench for 2 innings than 15 days.

I won’t go so far as to say that Rollins is a 5 tool player but Smokehouse is largely right. By all accounts Rollins is the clubhouse leader. While not as important as in other sports, being the emotional leader of a team is not something that can be dismissed or easily replaced.

You may disagree but Rollins has the the heart and soul of the Phillies. That 38 game hitting streak, a extra inning double that sent the Dodgers packing in the 2008 Division Series. Real Phillies fans love this man. I hope they can get together. He’s a 5 tool player. But, he is getting older like all of us. Can the Phillies win without him. Of course they can. Why did the Phillies win. Look up the middle with Utley and Rollins. That’s why.

I have been saying for a while that Jimmy thinks he’s more valuable to this team than he really is, but some of your statements are absurd and completely inaccurate.

Jimmy started playing full time for the team in 2001 and a team he’s been on has never lost more than 81 games, and are usually well over .500, so “him and 8 other bumbs” never lost close to 100 games. Also the Phillies, even before they got over the hump in 2007 and won the division, have no such history of collapsing in Septembers. I’d guess, without looking at the numbers, that over his career they are probably one of the best, if not the best team in September over the years.

So while I agree on some of your points, and don’t want to overpay for him, a lot of your argument is flat out wrong.

I think he’s referring to the 2 or 3 times in his career that he didn’t run out pop flys he hit that were dropped. Oh, and then about 2 years ago he referred to the fans as front runners. So, yeah, he’s lazy and has a bad attitude. Never mind the fact that even through his last two injury plagued seasons he still played some pretty good defense.

While the market has shrunk for Rollins, the supply of shortstops has also shrunk considerably. If Rollins signs with the Tigers, who is Philly going to turn to? Short of trading Cole Hamels to the Marlins, there are no short stops around who come close to Rollins production, even after a few down seasons.

3 years, 33 million, with a team option for a 4th. 10-11 mil if he stays, 3 mil if they don’t want him back. Take it or leave it.
I have a strong dislike peronsally for Rollins (No, I will not forget that he said “all Phillies fans are front runners”. After all the years I spent watching him and 8 other bumbs lose near 100 games a year, or spend 5 seasons collapsing in September), but he is still serviceable. He’s great with the glove, and a plus player on the base paths.
However, he is declining year after year at the plate, has spent a lot of time inured over the past 3 years, and is a terrible lead off hitter who pouts and whines if he isn’t in the leadoff spot. At this point, I’m not more excited about Rollins than I would of been about Furcal, or any of the other guys that have/will move around this off-season.
At this point, the “leadership” label is all that you are paying him for. Personally, I think guys like Doc, Lee, Hamels, Papplebom, Utley, Chooch, Polanco (if he’s back) and Victorino can lead themselves, and take over any void Rollins leaving would cause.

I’m not saying I don’t want him back, I’m just saying that I want him back at a good price (I would say “fair”, but IMO, 10-11 million is more than “fair” for Rollins’ current skill level

I tend to agree. I think Rube called Rollins’ bluff. Good move, I wouldn’t mind him back, but the contract has to be right at this point in his career.
