Rick Santorum likes his fantasy baseball teams to be clean

Dec 14, 2011, 12:30 PM EDT

Rick Santorum

Presidential candidate — hey, don’t look at me like that; he’s still running! — Rick Santorum did a podcast with Politico and the topic of fantasy baseball came up.  Seems Santorum is an avid and, apparently, quite successful fantasy player. Who knew?

The fun part: Santorum does not approve of players who use PEDs. Not just in real life, but not even on his fantasy team. Asked about his fantasy rosters over the years, the former senator from Pennsylvania had this to say:

“Well, I mean, you know, I’m trying to think back whether I ever did guys with steroids or not,” said the former senator. “You know, I think I canned [former New York Yankee Jason] Giambi when I found out about that a few years ago. So, no, I don’t know if I’ve ever had a guy on my team like that, now that you think about it. You know, you have folks you suspect but you’re not sure whether they did them or not. But, no, I think I’ve have pretty much of a clean team, I feel pretty good about that record.”

I’m glad to hear that Santorum never “did guys with steroids.” Because that would violate two parts of his moral code.

Not having steroid “users” is the new market inefficiency?

    • Old Gator - Dec 14, 2011 at 7:33 PM

Steroids aren’t a factor here. Inbreeding might be, though.

  2. mkd - Dec 14, 2011 at 12:42 PM

    Politicians are such blowhards.

  3. WhenMattStairsIsKing - Dec 14, 2011 at 12:42 PM

Wow, I had no idea Santorum could process thought.

    • Old Gator - Dec 14, 2011 at 2:04 PM

He can’t. I know his ghost writer.

  4. seanmk - Dec 14, 2011 at 12:42 PM

I want to play in a fantasy league with Rick Santorum. the wavier wire for PED players would be great!

    • bkarbour - Dec 14, 2011 at 1:13 PM

Could you leverage good trades against Santorum by spreading false steroid rumors? I agree, a league I want to play in.

      • Utley's Hair - Dec 14, 2011 at 1:17 PM

With Santorum, it doesn’t just have to be PED related, either.

      • Tick - Dec 14, 2011 at 3:03 PM

Agreed. I’d wipe the floor with this idiot. Keep morals out of fantasy sports. I’d draft Ahmajinedad if he could win me the prize money.

  5. blueintown - Dec 14, 2011 at 12:42 PM

    Scumbag.

    • Utley's Hair - Dec 14, 2011 at 1:20 PM

As a Pennsylvania resident who suffered through his two excruciating terms as our senator, I would have to applaud your assertion.

  6. dowhatifeellike - Dec 14, 2011 at 12:49 PM

Being ignorant and intentionally avoiding those with PED allegations are not the same thing.

  7. bozosforall - Dec 14, 2011 at 12:50 PM

    Santorum
    1. The frothy mix of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex.
    2. Senator Rick Santorum.

    God Bless Dan Savage!

    • qcubed3 - Dec 14, 2011 at 1:02 PM

In a thousand years, nobody will remember who Santorum is; however, in a thousand years, everyone will still know what a santorum is.

  8. Kyle - Dec 14, 2011 at 12:55 PM

Taking a moral stance in your fantasy baseball roster is pretty hilarious.

    • drunkenhooliganism - Dec 14, 2011 at 1:28 PM

I won’t have Roethlisberger on my fantasy baseball roster. I saw it’s because he’s a rapist, but I think, deep down, it’s because he’s fantastically overrated as fantasy player.

      • drunkenhooliganism - Dec 14, 2011 at 1:29 PM

Does this site autocorrect “football” into “baseball” because I swear I wrote “football”

      • drunkenhooliganism - Dec 14, 2011 at 1:30 PM

        Apparently it doesn’t.

      • spudchukar - Dec 14, 2011 at 2:12 PM

        Good idea though.

  9. Utley's Hair - Dec 14, 2011 at 12:56 PM

I just have to point out that Santorum said “…I’m trying to think back whether I ever did guys with steroids or not…” Thanks. Carry on….

    • WhenMattStairsIsKing - Dec 14, 2011 at 1:03 PM

Am I completely aloof, or have you been gone from comment threads for many fortnights?

      • Utley's Hair - Dec 14, 2011 at 1:08 PM

Hey, thanks for noticing. I’ve been taking it easy on here recently for the last few months. A lot of personal crap—both previously known as well as unexpected—to sift through.

      • koufaxmitzvah - Dec 14, 2011 at 1:22 PM

        Nothing about pie, I hope.

      • Utley's Hair - Dec 14, 2011 at 1:52 PM

        Felix or apple?

      • bozosforall - Dec 14, 2011 at 2:51 PM

        Hair

      • WhenMattStairsIsKing - Dec 14, 2011 at 4:43 PM

        Hope all is well, Utley.

      • Utley's Hair - Dec 14, 2011 at 6:44 PM

Thanks. Lots of cake has helped. And a slight uptick in drinking. Oh, and family, too….

    • cur68 - Dec 14, 2011 at 1:06 PM

Noted that on the first read through, UH. Tell me, do all American political figures go in for this level of tedium? I thought skill with finance, worldy affairs, a sense of the law, and a moral code that is beyond what others dictate would be more important. I don’t know the man and I’m not claiming his Canadian brethren in politics are any better, but I’d hoped for more.

      • Utley's Hair - Dec 14, 2011 at 1:11 PM

Santorum seems to be a low water mark in conservative American politics. And before I get jumped on, he has complementary—not complimentary, mind you—figures on the left, too.

      • JBerardi - Dec 14, 2011 at 6:05 PM

“And before I get jumped on, he has complementary—not complimentary, mind you—figures on the left, too.”

        Ahh, false equivalency.

    • bigleagues - Dec 14, 2011 at 2:20 PM

You know how guys like this are . . . he somehow manages to make the play-offs one year out of 10 and that’s justification enough to claim he’s a good fantasy player even though he rarely if ever finishes outside of the bottom half of the league.

When you’re super anti-gay, you start making statements that make you sound super-gay.

Rick Sanitarium is a cultural relic and I would DESTROY him at Fantasy Baseball.

      Hear me roar.

      • cur68 - Dec 14, 2011 at 3:26 PM

‘leagues: own him like I own my pickup truck.

  10. spudchukar - Dec 14, 2011 at 2:16 PM

Correct me if I am wrong. but this hasn’t been a particularly impressive stretch for Pennsylvania.

  11. Francisco (FC) - Dec 14, 2011 at 2:42 PM

I’m glad to hear that Santorum never “did guys with steroids.”

OK… what about doing guys WITHOUT steroids?

  12. 18thstreet - Dec 14, 2011 at 3:46 PM

Funny thing — I took Rick Santorum in my fantasy GOP primary, and I’m stuck in last place.

    • JBerardi - Dec 14, 2011 at 6:04 PM

You could pick up Huntsman. He went undrafted.

      • Utley's Hair - Dec 14, 2011 at 6:41 PM

Cain was penalized for too many (wo)men on the field…

  13. franklapidus316 - Dec 14, 2011 at 4:07 PM

Hey Rick, I’d trade you Jason Bay for Ryan Braun on my NL Keeper team.

  14. stratton106 - Dec 14, 2011 at 4:31 PM

That picture looks like it’s from a 1980’s sitcom. Is that when Santorum is from?

  15. JBerardi - Dec 14, 2011 at 6:03 PM

    Santorum’s team: The Frothy Mixtures.

  16. hushbrother - Dec 14, 2011 at 7:29 PM

Best to just tune out the politicians when they opine on the subject of steroids.
