Quote of the Day: Jason Isbell on why indie rockers like baseball

Dec 15, 2011, 2:01 PM EDT

Jason Isbell

Dave O’Brien, baseball writer for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, is a big indie rock fan. Jason Isbell, former guitarist for Drive-By Truckers and current leader of the band the 400 Unit is a huge Braves fan.  So it makes sense that O’Brien interviewed Isbell.

And the interview is great, both for baseball and music purposes. One question was why it seems like there are so many indie rockers into baseball:

I think the pace of the game, along with the intelligence involved, keeps a lot of us artsy types interested.  Somehow baseball doesn’t seem as “jock” centered as other major sports.

Meanwhile, Hank Williams Jr. likes football. I rest my case.

That aside, great interview. Check it out.

Well now we know what the iPod in The Lair has on it…I presume its an iPod: could be a turntable or 8track, though…

It’s a wall filled floor to ceiling with cassingles.

…and a robot arm that loads him into his tape deck. I bet he has a ‘roomba’ trundling around, though.

Craig, you may want to look at Hanks favorite non cowboy hat before you go too far with this one… LOL!

That’s an Alabama hat, not a Braves hat

        I stand corrected sir. Thanks.

For the record, Isbell puts on a beast of a live show. Highly recommended.

I saw him live in Dallas about a month ago. Pretty incredible show.

And then some jackass had to go and steal his band’s van and gear.

Southern Rock Opera. One of the great releases of the past 10 years. Isbell shreds.

Isbel is a beast. He wrote so many of my favourite DBT tunes. Got his pick at a gig once. Keep on rockin Jason.

There’s certainly a correlation between the fact that most indie rock fans are middle-class,college educated, white kids and that baseball’s demographics seem to skewing towards midle-class, college educated, white kids. That makes sense.

    Open wide for some soccer!

Will Johnson, another indie rocker mentioned in the article, also does some phenomenal baseball art. Worth checking out.
