Contrary to recent reports, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe is hearing that the Cubs are “not major players” for free agent first baseman Prince Fielder because they are “not ready to spend big.”

Cafardo is a Boston-based writer and his information goes against what has been reported by CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman, ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick and others, so there’s been some speculation that Cubs president Theo Epstein might have planted the thought in order to shroud his new club’s pursuit. But Cafardo isn’t just some guy. He’s regularly spot-on about trades and free agent signings from around the baseball world, and he has sources that stretch beyond Boston.

Fielder, 27, owns a fantastic .929 career OPS and slugged 38 home runs in 162 games this past year for Milwaukee. He’s also drawing interest from the Mariners, Rangers, Blue Jays, Nationals and Dodgers.

I have this dream, where no one signs Fielder. They are scared off by his weight/size, his agent, and his money demands. He gets mad. Fires Boras. Reduces his asking price. Adopts the Yoenis Cespedes work out ethic. Alex Anthopolous (who, being pretty clever, will have Jose Bautista with him) swoops in and has a heart to heart with a now buff Fielder. He signs with the Beavermen for 12 million/year for 5 years. Then Jessica Alba and/or Minka Kelly come over to my place with a big chocolate cheese cake, some whipped cream, and a liberal attitude to clothing and relationships…actually never mind the first part of that, I’ll just go with the last bit….

Now you are talking. You deserve both Minka and Jessica, even though both of them are probably too stuck up to realize it.

The Jays are totally pissed at Boras and his habit of inferring that they are interested in his clients even if they are not. I am sure that they would pay Fielder no more than $15 million a year for 5 years.

I have a friend who frequently deals with celebrities. He says that Jessica Alba is one the nicest people he has ever met.

Are they bringing their Derek Jeter autographed balls that he gives out?

This just in: neither are the Padres.

Local sources in Chicago have been playing it down all week.

Best guess is it’s only Boras trying to keep the Cubs’ name in it.

Nationals GM Mike Rizzo last week on reports his team might be interested in Fielder, “(laughing) that’s not even a good lie.”

Boras continues to use his media mouthpieces to create the false impression of widespread interest in his client.

Yep, it is clearly not the right time for the Cubs to spend big….they don’t need just one player….they need a lot, if they were dumb enough to sign Fielder, his best remaining years would be wasted on a non-competitive club.

First of all, you gotta know that I’m not just some guy. But, Brennan, your voice sounded like a mix between Fergie and Jesus.

Typical of the media. This guy has no clue, he’s just writing media BS to try to make themselves relevant.

    • paperlions - Dec 16, 2011 at 8:03 AM

Typical commenter BS, a report says something you hope isn’t true, so you throw stones at the person that reported it.

Rumor has it that Baltimore Orioles are going to make a major push for Prince Fielder this coming week now that they have bolstered there pitching staff. Made the owner is finally getting the message that to win you have to send money.

That is correct. I will be happy to give him the wiring instructions to my charmed bank account.
