No, if the winning bidder and the player cannot come to an agreement, it’s over. Last year, the A’s won the bidding for Hisashi Iwakuma but were unable to agree on a contract. He says he will be posted again this year after some more pitchers – he mentions Darvish, Kuroda, and Oswalt – are signed. He has arrived or will arrive soon in Los Angeles to meet with his U.S. agent.

This document is from 2000, but it fits the pattern of all the posting negotiations I have heard of. Paragraphs 8 through 13 cover the posting process.

This seems to set up the opportunity to allow a team to make a high bid and a low contract offer to block a rival. Chairman Bud can award the NPB player to the next highest bidder, with the approval of the NPB club, if he thinks there are any such shenanigans involved. I’m sure all the parties involved feel so much better knowing this.

After the NPB player is posted, MLB teams have four business days to decide whether and how much to bid. Then the NPB team has four business days to decide whether to accept the bid. Then the MLB team and the player have 30 days to agree to a contract.

They give the winning bidder the oppurtunity to work out a contract…if not, then it most likely falls to the next bidder and so on.

Can someone please explain why the hold up? If it really goes to the highest bidder, can’t they just enter in the team names and their bid amount in Excel and sort? Seems pretty easy. What else goes into a bid?

Next Tuesday? but, but, but…I’m having eye surgery early on Tuesday morning…I’ll be effectively blind for days after…DAMNIT! I need to know if the Beavermen get Darvish before Tuesday…Drew ya gotta call in those favours, stool those pigeons, tap those leaks, put that ear to the ground man! Get me that information by Monday night…if not sooner. I’ll keep an eye out for it…

And who knows when Fielder will sign. After that, it’s down to guys you might want on your team but wouldn’t be, like, huge news (Jackson, Beltran, Rollins, etcetera).

Maybe Shields will get traded, or something.

Living in Chicago, I’d be happy to see the Cubs land him so I can go see him pitch in-person. Of course, that’s assuming my beloved Indians didn’t win the bidding (laughs hysterically).

Wow that K/BB ratio is very Ben Sheets circa 2004. His criminally underrated ’04 season is one of the best ever by a “losing” pitcher. That was the year he went 12-14 and it finally dawned on me that W/L records are meaningless as individual statistics.
