How ’bout those Nationals?

Dec 16, 2011, 6:30 PM EDT

MLB.com’s Bill Ladson chimes in on the current grand plan in Washington:

Unfortunately, Ladson ran out of room before he could add Melvin Mora, Frank Catalanotto, Ricky Ledee and John Vander Wal to the list.

Hideki Matsui patiently waits to be signed…

    • natstowngreg - Dec 17, 2011 at 10:48 AM

Alas, the Nats have no place for Hideki.

      • WhenMattStairsIsKing - Dec 19, 2011 at 1:39 PM

        Nor does MLB in general.

What happened to the Nats big plans to add big pieces in anticipation of the Strasburg/Harper era? That Jason Werth disaster must have really scared them off.

    • natstowngreg - Dec 17, 2011 at 11:00 AM

Not necessarily. Werth was a statement; the Nats are prepared to spend money. They don’t have to prove that anymore.

However, the rumors of the Nats throwing big money at overpriced free agents were overblown. There are still opportunities to add talent before Spring Training. No need to panic.

I bet the Yankees would trade ARod for Ryan Zimmerman and a full season’s supply of urinal cakes.

    • purnellmeagrejr - Dec 17, 2011 at 8:02 AM

were you aware that many women have never even seen a urinal cake?

      • foreverchipper10 - Dec 19, 2011 at 11:13 AM

I remember when I worked at a restaurant about 7 years ago one of the young girls up front (a hostess) was cleaning out stuff kept in the cabinets up front. She stumbled upon a urinal cake, looked at me and said “Hey these smell good. We should hang these around the restaurant.” I looked at her in complete shock, burst out laughing and ran to the back to tell everyone what she did. Having fun at the expense of a 17-year old girl rules. Or at least it did when I was still close to that age.

    We wouldn’t accept that trade

  5. muckthefets23 - Dec 16, 2011 at 11:43 PM

Come on now the urinal cakes alone are more than fair, you may get less if Scott boras shows up with his Jedi mind trick that seems to be pretty effective on Mr. Rizzo

Oh, look: The second-string blogger is making fun of the Nationals and is blissfully unaware of the irony.

    • natstowngreg - Dec 17, 2011 at 11:04 AM

Matthew knows what he is doing.

The Nationals won 80 games this year. Thats EIGHTY. Thats 13 more games than the year before. And they did that with Strasburg gone for most of the year, Ryan Zimmerman hurt half the year, Jason Werth having an off year (which is not too shocking with no on like Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins protecting him in the lineup) and little offense. Core young players like Ian Desmond, Danny Espinosa, Tyler Clippard, Drew Storen, Michael Morse, Wilson Ramos, Jordan Zimmerman, and people forget Ryan Zimmermans only what, 27. It would be nice to add a couple more bats, but Adam Laroche is coming back, Harper could see the majors this year, and Ryan Zimmermans healthy. Thats 3 good bats as it is. Rizzo knows what he is doing, and the rest of you dont.

Careful. Have you met the Plexiglass Principle?

  8. natstowngreg - Dec 17, 2011 at 11:11 AM

    You forgot Jason Michaels.

Irony aside, Ladson is addressing the point that Davey wants more offense from his bench. Rizzo will sign a bunch of guys to compete for bench jobs. And yes, as Craig noted earlier, this is a very slow news time.
