Bobby Abreu would welcome a trade

Bobby Abreu AP

Ken Rosenthal hears that Bobby Abreu would like to be traded by the Angels. He won’t ask for one, though, because that’s not his style.

Passive-aggressive is just the worst, no?

Anyway, the idea is that the little 1B/DH/OF mix in Anaheim is fairly crowded at the moment and will be even more so if, as expected, Kendrys Morales is able to contribute.  Abreu still wants a regular position and playing time and isn’t likely to get it if things turn out that way.
Abreu makes $9 million this year, the last of his deal.  He hit .253/.353/.365 in 2011, so that’s not exactly a cost-effective addition for anyone.  The Angels may just be better off keeping him around in the event Morales proves gimpy again.

What is the going rate for an aging outfielder who isn’t as good as he once was, and has proven to 3 franchises that he has no heart?

Ouch! That’s a bit harsh don’t you think? Bobby’s no fool and he knows his days are numbered; but baseball is in fact a business and this is a pure business move. I can’t blame him for trying to pry a couple bucks out of Artie after what he has seen him pay for those free agents. The worst that can happen is that they trade him to the Mets

62.9 fWAR. I’ll take his lack of heart any day.

Get out a fork and knife, DiPoto, it’s time to eat a big ol’ contract!

With one year left, and the injury prone Morales, eating this contract isn’t worthwhile

He would make a great hitting coach once the reality sets in his playing days are over.

Eh, I’d probably dump him. He’s a DH that slugged .365 last year. Not to mention the logjam they have between the outfield and DH…Abreu, Wells, Hunter, Trout, Bourjos, and if Morales makes it back he’s probably gonna be the full time DH since they have Albert now. I’d rather dump Wells but uh…probably safe to assume they’re not gonna do that. It’s more about Abreu potentially blocking Trout than it is the 9 mil.

Even Trumbo factors into that. They have so many guys on that end of the defensive spectrum.

Sooner GMs learn about sunk costs, the sooner their teams will get better.

Would fit in as Kubel replacement in Minnesota

  4. kpow55 - Dec 19, 2011 at 5:25 PM

Pack up, i’ll drive you to the airport.

I’d trade him to the Giants for some middle relief. The Giants have no hitting to speak of.

    • bigxrob - Dec 19, 2011 at 7:13 PM

Abreu doesn’t have any hitting to speak of, he’ll fit right in.
