Considering how much money has been given to marginal and has been players, this is a nice signing. If healthy, Blake can be a solid contributor on a part-time basis and still has some decent on base skills. He strikes me as a future coach so he should be a good influence in the club house.

It's an OK depth signing, although the Rockies really needed a big stick to play 3B, like Aramis Ramirez or David Wright. But yes, WhenMattStairsIsKing, Blake would have been useful for the Cubs, because, trust me, Ian Stewart WILL stink up the joint regularly. You'll learn to love seeing him either: A) Stand like a statue, utterly paralyzed, as a two-strike fastball splits the plate; or B) Swing feebly at an 0-2 curveball in the dirt, completely surprised by the fact that pitchers are even allowed to resort to such trickery!

This is a good gamble on behalf of Rockies' GM Dan O'Dowd. Blake, if reasonably healthy, can produce on some level. He has power, can hit for average beyond what Ian Stewart ever did and is a true professional.

The Rockies aren't making the big-splash free-agent moves (Michael Cuddyer will be helpful and cost a lot but he's not a star) but O'Dowd is changing the mix in Denver. He's trying while also waiting, eagerly, on his talented farm system.
